Store Clerk

 The Willy Street Co-op is a natural foods grocery cooperative with 3 retail locations in Madison and Middleton, Wisconsin.  We are looking to hire both full-time and part-time Store Clerks for all three locations (Willy West, Willy East and Willy North), and Kitchen Clerks for our production kitchen (OSK).

Starting Pay: $12.00

Job Title: Store Clerk
Reports to: Department Managers, Assistant Store Director and Store Director
Status: Hourly, up to 40 hours per week

Job Summary:  To ensure the highest level of service possible to Willy Street Co-op’s internal and external customers.  To ensure all departments are fully staffed as needed. 

Work Environment:  Fast paced retail environment with food service equipment and coolers and in cold/hot working conditions (i.e. cooler or near heated surfaces). Other high to moderate noise including but not limited to computers, cash registers, paging, telephones, music and human voices.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Customer Service

Customer service is the Co-op's primary focus in providing food, goods, and services to its customers. It is the goal of the staff     that all customers are treated in a respectful and courteous manner, paying close attention to their individual needs. This personal care and attention should be directed to all customers to ensure that shopping at the WSGC is as comfortable and satisfying an experience as possible.

  • Greet and offer assistance to customers
  • Treat people fairly, consistently and with respect
  • Know product locations in order to assist customers in finding what they need throughout the store
  • Answer customer questions, or accompany customers to other staff as necessary to answer questions


2. Daily Operations

The Co-op relies Store Clerks  to be friendly, efficient and knowledgeable staff who are cross-trained in two  (or more) departments and comfortable exercising good judgment and taking initiative in those departments of the store. Though the Clerk reports directly to the Store Manager, they will be under the direction of the person in charge in the department in which they are scheduled or the MoD.

  • Be present and prepared to begin work in any department as assigned at the start of scheduled shift
  • Work efficiently and report back to the Department Manager, supervisor in charge, MoD, Assistant Store Director or Store Director to take on additional assignments.

3. Position Responsibilities

The Co-op requires the Store Clerks  to be cross-trained in two (or more) departments. This includes the following basic job responsibilities pertaining to the many departments within the store.


  • Perform deli and cheese counter duties and food prep, replenish hot and cold bar, stock deli, cheese and bakery products, replenish coffee station, perform dish washing.
  • Perform meat counter duties and stock meat products.
  • Cull and stock produce.
  • Front, face and stock grocery products.
  • Perform all cashier duties.Bag groceries in the front end.
  • Clean the sales floor  and back stock areas regularly.
  • Fulfill all shift duties for the day (in the scheduled department)
  • Comply with Health Department Regulations and follow safe food handling practices.
  • Increase product knowledge over time.
  • Participate in quarterly inventory. 


4. All Staff Duties

  • Abide by all co-op policies and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook and other company documents
  • Participate in required trainings and meetings.
  • Keep store orderly and clean
  • Maintain a positive attitude
  • Set a positive example for employees
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by Department Manager, Department Assistant Manager, Shift Supervisor, MoD, Assistant Store Director or Store Director
