Project Manager - Durham, NC

The role of the Project Manager is to plan and track the execution of big data and analytics projects.  The Project Manager works closely with an Account Manager, Product Owner, Project Lead, or Consultant to scope, prioritize, and execute projects.  Additionally, the Project Manager works hand in hand with the data engineers, systems engineers, and data scientists responsible for project delivery.  The Project Manager is responsible for tracking and reporting the delivery and financial status of a project including burndown rate. WebbMason Analytics projects are complex and involve working with advanced technologies and analytics methodologies, as well as often working across business units within customer accounts.

The ability to work independently and “own” all aspects of an initiative are critical to success in this position. Candidates must be able to assume the authority to drive work to completion and proactively resolve any blocking issues. Critical thinking and creative problem solving skills are essential as well as the ability to prioritize, organize, and effectively manage multiple projects and assignments.

The PM is responsible for managing all project tasks and status in JIRA and ensuring that all project time is tracked accurately and on a timely basis. The PM will also manage all financials associated with projects, including budgeting, cost tracking, and invoicing. In addition to day-to-day project management the PM also plays the role of the business analyst for each project. They must be efficient and effective at reporting on all aspects of project execution, including status/progress, costs, revenue, profitability, and many other areas. The ideal candidate will not only support efficient execution of projects, but also help us to improve the overall efficiency and profitability of our business through data analysis.

The PM role provides an opportunity to grow into a more senior PM or eventually Account Manager or Consultant but it also offers the opportunity to develop data engineering and analysis skills and “pivot” into a more technical role depending on the skills and interests of the individual.


Project Manager Responsibilities

For each customer/project, the PM is responsible for:
  • Managing Agile Toolset
  • Jira
  • Creating/configuring boards for each project and for across projects
  • User management
  • Additional admin tasks as needed including workflow, custom field, permission updates
  • Ensuring all work is logged on a daily basis
  • Regular auditing to ensure compliance with all standards
  • Harvest
  • Creating/configuring customers, projects, and tasks
  • Auditing hours regularly to ensure accuracy
  • Preparing monthly invoices
  • Confluence
  • Creating and maintaining documentation spaces for projects and clients
  • Managing Contracts/Projects
  • New client/project setup including creation of all support materials including estimation worksheets 
  • Managing all contract documents and supporting materials
  • Development and maintenance of project plans to track milestones and deliverables
  • Managing multiple scrum teams of various size
  • Requirements Development
  • Consult with clients to understand the business problem and document use-cases and other details that impact scope definition and project planning and management
  • Writing User Stories and Tasks independently
  • Customer Support
  • First line of communication between WMA and customers for support issues
  • Working closely with different types of individuals on the customer side, including managers, data engineers, business analysts, IT people, and others
  • Project status updates and contract status to clients as requested by Account Manager
  • Team Leadership
  • Scheduling and running internal meetings including daily stand-ups and retrospectives
  • Leading (from WMA side) customer status meetings
  • Supporting delivery team management tasks including resource allocation planning
  • Coach team members across the company regarding Agile practices
  • Identify process improvement opportunities and help define solutions
  • Analytics and Reporting
  • Ad-hoc and regular reporting on status and performance of the team with respect to specific customers, projects, types of projects, individuals, and other features
  • Tracking costs, margins, and expected billings weekly
  • Tracking invoices against total contract amounts
  • Provide analytic insights about financial data to leadership team
  • Automation of data preparation and report generation
  • Analysis to inform strategic direction and decision making of company executives

  • Ability to prioritize and organize effectively and manage multiple projects and assignments in a technical environment

  • Excellent critical thinking skills
  • Experience with agile development methodology, especially Scrum, 
  • Ability to work independently with minimal instructions
  • Proven ability to perform effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
  • Understanding of project budget forecasting and reporting 
  • BA/S or higher 
  • Minimum 3 years experience in a project management role, preferably in a technical field 
  • Minimum 1-3 years experience using Jira or other task-tracking systems 
  • Experience with analytics/reporting tools (Excel, Tableau, SQL, Python, R, etc.) is a plus
  • Scrum Master Certification is a plus
