The Biochemistry team at Vital is seeking a passionate and creative scientist to fill the role of Research Scientist. We're looking for a teammate proficient in all aspects of project management, from design to deployment, who can employ excellence at the benchtop to accomplish stated goals.
As a Research Scientist at Vital, you will be involved directly with the design, development and validation of our next-generation assays in complex matrices. You will regularly interact with other Vital team members to establish needs, help with result analysis, and transfer analytical methods or protocols. You will work closely with our Directors of Biochemistry and Analytics, as well as our optical and software product team to build and refine our biological assay platforms.
The role will involve substantial wet bench work to troubleshoot and optimize tests through well-thought out experimental plans. You will be expected and encouraged to actively contribute to our product development direction, and present novel procedural or scientific concepts that will positively impact all aspects of Vital's operations.
What you will be doing
- Designing and executing experiments precisely and carefully to drive development and optimization activities for molecular assays;
- Developing and/or qualifying analytical assays suitable for characterization, in-process testing and/or product stability;
- Employing biochemistry and molecular methods such as: spectroscopy, protein purification, antibody conjugation, DNA modification, aptamer construction, fluorescent labeling, fabricating and processing nanomaterials to construct assay reagents and test functional efficacy;
- Use a strong instrumentation background in optical microscopy, UV-Vis spectroscopy, DLS, circular dichroism (CD), fluorescence spectrometry, NMR, mass spectrometry, TEM, or SEM to verify reactivity, characterize products and establish performance metrics;
- Trending analytical metrics to confirm method reproducibility and consistency. Experience with meta-analysis an asset;
- Writing and reviewing protocols and reports describing analytical assays contributing to regulatory filings;
- Transferring methods to other internal or external partners and supporting the collaboration through timely result analysis;
- Communicating analytical results to peers and leadership to support decision-making, and collaborating with development teams to support goals and timelines;
- Managing multiple tasks and changing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
What you will need
- PhD degree in chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, biophysics, bioengineering, or a related field;
- Fluent in chemistry (biological contexts) with experience in bioconjugation;
- 2 years of academic or industrial laboratory experience in a related field with a proven track record of laboratory success;
- Fundamental understanding of kinetic rate theory and competent in math and physics;
- Proven success working with bimolecular reactions, assay design, and/or product development is an asset;
- Ability to multitask, handle frequently changing job functions, and rapidly learn new techniques and approaches;
- Ability to communicate results and concepts clearly to scientists and nonscientists, can interface concepts with software engineers.
What would be desired for you to have
- Past experience constructing or working with immunoassays, aptasensors or enzymatic methods for molecular detection or diagnostics;
- Success functionalizing surfaces with biomolecules using a variety of chemical techniques or click chemistry;
- Contributions to pre-clinical or clinical validation of a medical device or detection technique;
- Familiarity with multidisciplinary teams working to achieve a challenging research goal;
- Some knowledge of microfluidics, developing hardware or basic programming;
- Appreciation of puns.

This position will require the employee to handle Protected Health Information (PHI) for duties related to provider credentialing, complaints and grievances, claims issues, Medical Management issues and risk and compliance issues. Access to the PHI contained in the claims, Medical Management and provider credentialing systems is necessary for this staff member.
