Bioinformatics Scientist

Viome is a wellness as a service company that applies artificial intelligence and machine learning to biological data – e.g., microbiome, transcriptome and metabolome data – to provide personalized recommendations for healthy living. We are a small, interdisciplinary and passionate team of experts in biochemistry, microbiology, medicine, artificial intelligence and machine learning.

We are seeking a Bioinformatics Scientist with deep expertise in computational analyses of the microbiome. Working in conjunction with a multi-disciplinary R&D team, you will lead an agenda in the analysis of meta-transcriptomics, meta-genomics, and multi-omics data sets, to build a world-class team and platform from which we will discover, validate and develop cutting-edge next generation products.  This is a unique opportunity to have an impact on the success of a well-positioned, well-financed biotechnology company.

Responsibilities:
  • Participate in the bioinformatics agenda with in-depth knowledge of a broad range of computational analytical tools and strategies to analyze microbiome and multi-omic datasets
  • Help architect the overall structure of bioinformatics workflows and guide the implementation and delivery of scalable and robust production-level systems
  • Have hands-on technical and scientific experience to team with other bioinformatics team members.  
  • Provide intellectual and technical excellence to guide new discovery strategies.  Design, perform, troubleshoot and interpret experiments.
  • Work cross-functionally and collaboratively with biological and data science teams to implement new strategies and troubleshoot any unforeseen roadblocks
  • Clearly communicate bioinformatics strategies and data outputs to those not in the field such as internal stakeholders and consultants e.g. Legal, Regulatory and Manufacturing colleagues

Minimum Qualifications:
  • PhD in Bioinformatics with 2+ years of professional experience
  • Thorough knowledge of microbiology and microbiome literature and methodologies
  • Strong team player, organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Familiarity with and experience in the use of NCBI and other common gene, protein, taxonomy, and pathway annotations sources and databases
  • Understanding of data analysis with Python, Linux and Shell programming, Postgres SQL based databases, source code revision control such as git, svn or related systems
  • Experience with NGS with meta-transcriptomic and/or meta-genomics biological data analysis, NGS data, common sequence file formats and bioinformatics tools (bwa/bowtie, samtools, bedtools)
  • Excellent work ethic and willingness to work collaboratively in a fast-paced and dynamic work environment are essential
  • Preferred experience working in a CLIA regulated environment
