Cloud Support Engineer

Job Description

Urjanet seeks a Cloud Support Engineer to be part of our team in Atlanta, Georgia.  This team member will be working in tandem with the office in Chennai, India to help provide 24/7 support for our production operations in the cloud.  The successful candidate will be experienced with Linux, AWS, have solid troubleshooting skills, the ability to clearly communicate actions taken and document any gaps in procedures.

Primary duties and responsibilities
  • Monitor and maintain the production environment: Making sure that our production environment is continually available for our customers, and responding to any alerts or issues.  This will initially be a combination of level 1 and 2 support.
  • Shift coverage: Participate in 24/7 shift/shift rotation schedules to ensure continuous availability.
  • Identify performance issues and solutions:  Find items that are the cause of poor performance or interrupting availability and generate effective solutions for both the immediate future and for the longer term.
  • Create and update runbooks: Document issues and solutions as they arise or write completely new troubleshooting procedures if necessary.  
  • Communicate issues to relevant teams: Be able to clearly communicate issues and the troubleshooting already done in cases where escalation is necessary.  Communicate incident post-mortems out to management and/or team leads.  

Skills and experience needed to perform the job
  • At least 3-6 years experience in a Level 1 or 2 operations support role.
  • Strong knowledge of Linux OS: The vast majority of our production system is Linux based, specifically the Ubuntu distribution.  As a candidate, you MUST have this in order to be able to perform the job.
  • Root cause analysis and problem solving: Even with runbooks, the unexpected will happen.  Candidates for this position should be able to logically analyze problems that arise in the production systems, and come up with solutions that minimize downtime and does not compromise security.
  • Experience with scripting: Ability to understand existing Bash (and to a lesser extent, Python) scripts, as well as write new ones if necessary.
  • Strong understanding of commonly used internet protocols and basic networking: Knowing protocols like TCP, UDP, HTTP/S, DHCP, DNS, SMTP, SSH, LDAP and certificates/SSL/TLS will be necessary in your day-to-day troubleshooting.     
  • Knowledge of the AWS cloud platform: We heavily utilize the AWS cloud platform.  You do not need architecture level knowledge, but you should be familiar with services such as: EC2 (Instances, Security Groups, Load Balancers, Autoscaling), VPC, S3, Route53, CloudWatch, and CloudFormation.
  • Experience with Jenkins: We use Jenkins heavily in our day-to-day operations.
  • Familiarity with Atlassian products: We use multiple Atlassian products.  Familiarity with Jira, Confluence and Bitbucket will assist greatly in your in your day-to-day tasks.
  • Basic infosec knowledge: Understanding of how changes or fixes you apply will impact the security posture of our environment, as well as how to avoid compromising the security of our systems.
