Track-2: AI, Ethics and Media

Given the recent focus on issues at the intersection of AI, ethics and  media-misinformation, we have opened this new fellowship track to support fellows interested in exploring these critical issues in depth.

Topics:

  1. Ethics and AI
  2. Journalism and AI

As proud signatories of the Tech Inclusion Pledge, we at UnifyID are firmly committed towards creating and nurturing a culture of inclusivity. Hence, we would like to invite applications from individuals with diverse backgrounds and experiences to apply to our fellowship program. Given the underrepresentation of women and minorities in the domains of Machine Learning and Data Science, we would like to especially encourage individuals from those groups to apply.

How does the fellowship work?

Upon selection, the fellows will be initially partnered with a specific project team chosen according to their expertise and mapped to the appropriate mentor. Each fellow will also have the freedom to be jointly allocated to up to two more projects from the list as co-collaborators. The fellowship timeline spans over 3 months, from February 2019 to April 2019. The first week entails working with the mentor to come up with a 10-week timeline roughly detailing the steps that they plan to take to achieve the fellowship project end-goals. During the fellowship, the fellows are expected to convene in-person and present weekly updates in our office located in Redwood City, CA. We will certainly work with the fellows on a case-by-case basis to customize it to the extent that we can. In exceptional cases, they will be allowed to present via video chat. We plan to host the weekly-update meetings on the most popular choice of day-of-the-week selected by the fellows themselves during the application process.

All selected fellows will be awarded:

  1. Life-long designation as a UnifyID AI Fellow
  2. A fellowship stipend of $2,048
  3. Access to state-of-the-art GPU/TPU compute infrastructure, the specifics of which are decided on a case-by-case basis
  4. Access to the AI-fellows enclave space in our office in Redwood City
  5. Conference registration fees and attendance costs for all of the publications that emanate from the fellowship (for locations within US)
  6. Exclusive UnifyID Fellow swag
  7. Passes to the UnifyID AI Day to be held on April 19, 2019

The expected deliverables from each of the fellowship projects are:

  1. A research paper describing the project to be shared on ArXiv
  2. A detailed well-commented code submission that will be open-sourced via GitHub
  3. A one-page blog-post providing a less technical version of the project details
  4. A final presentation in .ppt or .pdf format during the UnifyID AI Day

We welcome applications from practitioners, tech-enthusiasts as well as students spanning both the undergraduate and graduate levels, with preference being placed on candidates residing in the Bay Area. The expected skill-sets that we seek from the applicants with regards to the tracks listed above are:
  • For Machine Learning and Data Science: Python, Lua, Julia, R, Scala | Scikit-learn, PySpark,  PyTorch, TensorFlow, Chainer
  • For AI and ethics/AI and Journalism: Portfolio
