The Scrum Master is a key role in facilitating the Scrum process with product development teams. They help their teams adopt and improve agile principles and methodologies. Scrum Masters are servant leaders guiding teams to continuously improve to higher levels of maturity by continually learning through inspection and adaptation. They serve as the Scrum Framework authority for the teams and evangelize and educate teams on, not only the process, but the true benefits of following the process.
The Scrum Master empowers delivery teams to deliver business value through their development and delivery execution. S/He works with Product Owners to ensure the appropriate development and delivery of the prioritized backlog.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Be a servant leader. You receive as much satisfaction from facilitating others’ success as your own.
- Removes impediments preventing the team from accomplishing its sprint goals and tasks.
- Able to communicate well with both your teams and other delivery teams as well as ensure the team and various stakeholders are always up-to-speed.
- Enthusiasm and high-energy when needed but calm and neutral in facilitating conflict resolution.
- Facilitates and follows up on regular Scrum ceremonies; including daily stand-ups, refinement sessions, estimating, sprint and release planning sessions, sprint reviews, and retrospectives.
- In Scaled Agile: Works with the Release Train Engineer (RTE) to deliver customer value throughout the Program Increment (PI) and supports the RTE in Agile Release Train (ART) ceremonies (e.g., ART Sync’s, Inspect & Adapt).
- Builds a trusting and safe environment where problems can be raised without fear of blame, retribution, or judgment.
- Fosters an environment where creativity and empowerment can flourish.
- Facilitates discussions, decision making, and conflict resolution.
- Generates scrum metrics for the teams to use and learn where improvements can be made. These include burndown charts, release burnup, and velocity, as well as other sprints, releases, and ART metrics.
- Supports the team in drafting working agreements including the definition of ready and definition of done.
- Guides the team to higher levels of maturity, at a pace that is sustainable and comfortable for the team.
- Helps to further the Agile community within the organization by creating learning opportunities for people in the organization (e.g. brown bag lunches) and advocating important Agile concepts.
- Works with Product Owners and other stakeholders to manage cross-team, department dependencies.
- Facilitates and coaches a number of teams with multiple levels of seniority to deliver the highest customer value.
Required Skills:
- 3+ years’ experience as a Scrum Master in a professional environment supporting Agile Development Teams and diligently applying Scrum principles, practices, and theory.
- 2+ years of development experience in business or technical areas.
- Ability to apply a wide variety of patterns and techniques to enable the team to achieve success.
- Conflict resolution: able to identify constructive conflict from destructive conflict; facilitate discussion of issues, different approaches and alternatives; and effectively resolve issues in a timely manner.
- Facilitate: able to calmly and in a neutral way guide and focus teams on value-add principles and collaboration.
- A thorough understanding and appreciation for Agile values and principles.
- Assertive: able to champion Agile and Scrum concepts and principles and be a voice of reason and authority.
- Knowledge and/or experience with widely successful Agile techniques: User Stories, Test Driven Development, Continuous Integration, Continuous Testing, Pairing, Automated Testing, Agile Games.
- Strong grasp of software development and technology.
Preferred Skills:
- Bachelor’s Degree in management, computer science, or engineering.
- Excellent communication and mentoring skills.
- Scrum Master certification (CSM).
- Experience, or at least understanding, of scaling agile in an enterprise.
