The CTCT division (a joint venture between Trimble and Caterpillar) develops positioning and control products for earthmoving and paving machines in the construction and mining industries, using technologies such as GPS, optical total stations, lasers and sonics. The products are used in a range of applications where the operator of the machine benefits from having accurate horizontal and vertical guidance.

Position Overview:
The System Compliance Engineer ensures that construction machine control systems meet regulatory requirements, with a particular focus on functional safety. The system compliance engineer works with a regulatory specialist to interpret standards, and collaborates with marketing and engineering teams to specify and design compliant products that surpass customer expectations of innovation and quality. This role directly contributes to the detailed implementation of functional safety requirements through all phases of development and product lifecycle. The position requires a blend of system, electrical, and software engineering skills.  Excellent interpersonal skills are also required to provide technical leadership and effectively guide teams through ambiguous situations.     
  • Lead transformation of functional safety standards into development processes and product requirements 
  • Contribute to the development of functionally safe system concepts and architectures 
  • Assist with functional decomposition of safety requirements, and cascading of outputs to system, subsystem, and component engineering teams
  • Collaborate with multi-discipline teams on validation and implementation of product safety requirements
  • Coordinate with multi-discipline engineering teams on safety lifecycle/V-model execution
  • Plan and coordinate project safety plans, and drive their implementation
  • Conduct functional safety assessments, using principles such as risk & hazard analysis, fault tree analysis, FMEA, FMEDA,  common cause failure analysis, and machine performance level calculations
  • Ensure that safety-related system documentation is properly generated, approved, stored, and maintained
  • Provide technical input for system verification testing
  • Assist with compliance impact analysis of product changes
  • Travel (including international) is less than 10%

Minimum Qualifications:
  • 5+ years of product development experience
  • 3+ years experience developing products with safety requirements
  • Formal functional safety training and/or certification for IEC 61508 or ISO 26262
  • BS in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or similar program

Preferred Skills:
  • Knowledge of embedded systems hardware and software development processes
  • Deep understanding of and experience applying standards such as ISO 13849, IEC 61508, and ISO 26262
  • Proven record applying functional safety principles and practices to product development, including the v-model framework
  • Familiarity with vehicle embedded system cybersecurity principles and best practices
  • Familiar with functions and usage of construction machinery
  • Experience designing and interfacing with vehicular communication and control systems  
  • System engineering competency - application level problem solving, schematics, communication protocols, system integration
  • Ability to reconcile functional and regulatory requirements, and turn them into detailed engineering specifications and other product development documentation
  • Experience contributing to FMEDAs and/or FMEAs
  • Technical leadership abilities - use of influence and experience to achieve safety goals
  • Solid analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Outstanding attention to detail
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a global team
