Title: Field Application Engineer
Location: Detroit MI, Westminster CO, or Sunnyvale CA
Division: Advanced Automotive Positioning
Trimble’s Autonomy Sector
Trimble recently formed the Autonomy Sector, combining multiple divisions with technology solutions for autonomous vehicle applications. Trimble has developed considerable IP suited for autonomous vehicles and the Autonomy Sector is poised for incredible growth.
Advanced Automotive Positioning
This Division is focused on the automotive and adjacent transportation segments. Trimble has served the automotive positioning market since 1990 and has numerous design wins associated with ADAS and autonomous vehicle applications. Our customers include both established and emerging vehicle OEMs and their Tier 1 partners developing technology stacks for autonomous vehicles.
Field Application Engineer (FAE)
The FAE is essential to delivering our value proposition. Although we sell or license positioning technology, establishing Trimble as a trusted adviser, rather than a supplier, is the key to our success. We accomplish this goal by adopting a system-level approach to bring customer programs to a successful conclusion. This leads to a strong, recurring business relationship and we have many examples. The FAE participates in all phases of the customer relationship from business development through the development and production cycles.
The FAE is part of team that includes sales management, program management and product development. The FAE serves as a technical expert on Trimble’s positioning technology and supports the customer during the design, implementation and qualification stages of the project. Trimble, and this Division in particular, is a highly collaborative environment much like a startup, but with the resources of a $3B+ highly-profitable corporation backing you up. The Division’s development organization is completely aligned with our customer success model and provides backup to the FAE as needed. Successful experience as an FAE can lead in multiple career directions.
The FAE is on the front line supporting customers during the design and implementation phase of ADAS and autonomous vehicle systems. FAE should understand embedded system design and software development processes. A background in automotive technology, GNSS positioning, inertial sensor technology or embedded systems is a definite aid, but not an absolute requirement. The FAE must have a strong technical aptitude, be an excellent communicator and have no fear of handling and analyzing data. Trimble has plenty of subject matter experts and a collaborative individual can easily find assistance when needed.
- Technical degree with a few years of design experience or 5+ years of relevant technical support experience. FAEs spend time at customer sites and should anticipate some travel. If you are an engineer with strong interpersonal skills and seek some customer interaction, this may be the ideal role for you.
