Job Duties:
- The UHMW Welding area consists of two butt fusion welders and one computerized table saw. The process in welding is largely based on quality and inspection. The welding operator works with sheets ranging in dimensions from .125”x 48”x 96” to .75”x 60”x 144”
- The operator does an inspection - sheets are measured for length, width, squareness, and gauge thickness. The operator is required to log all information to the corresponding MSO. The welding process requires the sheets of plastic to be placed against the welding bar and visually aligned by the operator
- During the welding process, the operator will be required to climb a three-step ladder to look down on the forming weld (bead). If the operator is satisfied with the visual inspection, they will allow the welding process to complete. If the weld does not meet visual inspection standards, the operator will then lengthen the weld process on the control panel
- Upon the completion of each weld, the operator uses a manual hand-held bead trimmer to scrape the top and bottom bead - then, after all sheets have been welded to MSO specifications, the operator will then check for additional scoring instructions. The scoring process utilizes either a hand-held power saw equipped with a scoring blade or a CNC router
- The welding operator will then map out all cuts to be made with a grease pencil. The scoring process requires operators to climb on top of the four-foot-high roller tables. The operator clamps the liner down to the table before walking on it
- The power tools run on a power line track in the ceiling which follows the operator the distance of the liner as they make the necessary cuts going by customer specifications. All Material used in the department is stored on skids. All material to be welded is staged on the appropriate welding table
- After a liner is complete, two to four clamps (depending on the liner width) are attached to the material using an air-powered ratchet. Chains are then linked to a rolling device on the end of a lift truck which has been specifically designed for this application
- The operator then winds the liner using the accelerator of the lift truck until it forms a tight cylinder of plastic. This process is also controlled by both customer specifications on the MSO and shipping instructions
