The City, the ambitious new, New York City-focused, not-for-profit digital news platform, is building its launch team. The local news landscape has been decimated in recent years by dramatic cuts and closures. The City has gathered some of journalism’s most dynamic leaders and sponsors to address this critical issue. As a leader on The City’s founding senior team, you'll help to create a vibrant newsroom filled with a team of extraordinary journalists dedicated to real reporting and getting results for the people of New York City.
POSITION OVERVIEW
Summary
The City is seeking a Publisher to develop and implement the Company’s revenue generation strategies across the individual and institutional (i.e. foundations, endowments) philanthropic, corporate sponsorship, membership and event channels. This position will report directly to the Board of Directors and working in close partnership with the Editor-in Chief.
The ideal candidate for this job will have experience in both traditional fundraising from philanthropic sources as well as a proven ability to create innovative new revenue models for a non-profit or other news or media organization. The ideal candidate will also have experience managing a small team and the combination of personal skills, relentless energy and a willingness to work hard and “get their hands dirty” that is required for an early stage, high growth nonprofit.
Compensation and benefits will be industry-competitive and commensurate with experience.

Responsibilities
- Develop and implement revenue generation strategies in channels including:
- Individual donors
- Institutional donors (i.e. foundations, endowments)
- Corporate sponsors
- Membership
- Develop marketing materials that support revenue generation, awareness and engagement strategies that effectively communicate The City’s mission and drive key performance metrics
- Oversee a small team that includes marketing and events, as well as finance, human resources, communications and legal
- Establish and develop a close and effective partnership with the Editor-in-Chief, the Board Chair and the Board Executive Committee
- Embody and compellingly communicate the mission and impact of The City’s unique, independent journalistic platform
Qualifications
- At least 5 years experience in not-for-profit development or a closely related field
- Demonstrated experience and track record in identifying, cultivating and generating sustained revenue from individual, institutional (i.e. foundation, endowment) and corporate donors
- Demonstrated ability to develop and implement earned revenue strategies
- Understanding of the challenges and opportunities for developing new revenue models for nonprofit journalism
- Demonstrated management experience
