Associate – Processing and Logistics
TerViva Bioenergy, Inc.
Oakland, CA
94612
Background:
TerViva is a fast-growing food and agriculture company, headquartered in Oakland, California, with offices in Florida and Hawaii. We believe that we need to use agriculture land better if we are to feed the rising global population in a climate-constrained world. We produce plant protein and vegetable oil by growing a non-GMO, sustainable tree crop called pongamia, which produces dramatically higher yields than other oilseed crops such as soybeans. We grow pongamia on farmland that can’t be used for traditional crops due to weather, disease or market challenges. Compared to soy, pongamia has far better economics and sustainability. We have planted our proprietary varieties of pongamia trees in various soils and climates in the US to validate agronomic performance.
TerViva’s main business is to produce edible food and feed ingredients from leguminous pongamia tree seeds. Also derived from pongamia, we are expanding our product offerings to include bio-based crop protection and other novel uses as bio-ingredients for personal care and cosmetic products.
Job Description and Responsibilities:
As part of Terviva’s Products and Processing team, we are looking for an associate to assist in the development of systems and procedures for oilseed handling - from harvest, to processing, to products. Significant time will be spent operating and optimizing TerViva’s existing oilseed equipment, including but not limited to the operation of forklifts, augers, dryers, aspirators, dehullers, expellers, and solvent extractors. The development of some operations will require small-scale laboratory experiments followed by scale-up projects, commissioning of new equipment, and assuring OSHA compliance at all phases of new and existing operations. In addition, the position will support oilseed logistics ranging from in-field harvest to long-term storage of inventory. This position will actively participate in the development of quality control procedures and testing throughout the Pongamia bean supply chain. Travel will be required for site visits to TerViva project locations and with contract partners.
Required Skills and Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural, Ag Engineering or related discipline.
Experience in adjacent agricultural operations such as grain elevators, oilseed crushing facilities or feed mills will be viewed favorably.
Familiarity with grain/oilseed quality control measures and procedures.
Familiarity with transportation operations and regulations for trucking products.
Ability to maintain rigorously organized documentation.
Personable demeanor paired with ability to clearly communicate with geographically-dispersed teammates around logistics and operations activities.
Willingness to periodically work long hours when required by project deadlines.
Ability to work independently; self-motivated and self-directed.
Authorization to work in the United States without Visa support.
Fluency in Spanish will be viewed favorably.
