Electrical Models R&D Engineer

This position is at the newly-opening R&D center of a global leader in the wind energy industry. 

Requirements

Education: B.Sc or M.Sc in electrical or electronic engineering

Previous Experience: Minimum experience in modeling and simulation of electrical or power electronic devices, 2 years.

Technical Knowledge:
 
  • Mathematics:
    • Numerical analysis.
    • Signal processing: Filtering, interpolation, FFT.o Control Theory
    • Optimization techniques
    • Controller tuning.

 
  • Electrical engineering:
    • Transmission and distribution networks.
    • Grid elements: (power transformers, power cables, reactive power compensation devices, protection and distribution of MV grids, ...) 
    • Power electronics
    • Electrical machines

 
  • Electrical studies:
    • Load flows.
    • Short circuits.
    • Transient stability (mainly LVRT and OVRT)
    • Electromagnetic transients simulation (EMT)
    • Dynamic studies (response to grid events or changes in power plant set points)
    • Simulation and modeling of control and electrical systems.

 
  • Software skills:
    • MATLAB and Simulink (expert level).
    • SimScape PowerSystem (professional level)
    • Control System toolbox (professional level)
    • At least one at professional level: PSCAD (desired one), ATP, PSS/E, DigSilent PowerFactory

 
Other Additional Knowledge:

 
  • Electrical engineering:
    • Transmission and distribution networks.
    • Voltage and frequency regulation systems.
    • Compensation devices: C-banks, STATCOM, SVC, OLTC.

 
  • Electrical studies:
    • Harmonics

 
  • Simulation & Modeling:
    • Wind turbines, desirable experience with DFIG and FC technologies for transient stability studies.
    • Wind power plants; or at least renewable energy power plants in which multiple components needs to be controlled at the same time to match the references or needs at point of common coupling. 
    • Renewable systems: mainly wind turbines, but also PV and storage.
    • Algorithms to control power plants, mainly wind turbines, power converters and/or renewable energy power plants. Experience with hybrid power plants will be a plus. Considering hybrid power plants the mix between the following: wind, solar and/or storage.
    • Creation and integration of compiled code into simulation tools (DLL, .o, .S-function...), and more specifically integration into PowerFactory.
    • Grid interaction: SSR, SSCI, weak grids, …

 
  • Renewable Energy:
    • Wind Turbine and Wind Farm engineering.
    • Wind to electricity principles.
    • DFIG and Full converter technologies.

 
  • Software skills:
    • Highly valuable

    • Least valuable (unless user models have been developed from scratch)

Languages: Advance level in English, writing and speaking. Spanish will be a plus.
 
Responsibilities

Mission: Develop and validate electrical simulation models in one of the softwares defined above of renewable energy power plants, including MV network, power plant controllers and generation elements (wind, solar, storage, ...) or hybrid power plants (mainly wind and solar) to perform transient stability studies.
 
Activities:
  • Development in Simulink, PSCAD or ATP of electrical simulation models
  • Simulation and modeling of renewable energy power plants.
  • Documentation of activities: design report, validation reports, user manuals, ...
  • Support to customers, either external or internal, regarding issues related with simulation models delivered.
  • Generation and/or integration of automatic generated code.
  • Support design activities regarding wind turbines.

 
Functions: 
  • Modeling and simulation. 
  • Reporting to project manager. 
  • Support to design and customer support teams regarding electrical models and grid interaction issues.

 
Mobility: Mobility is required to attend workshops or meetings in other countries, mainly in Spain but other countries possible. Probability and frequency expected (estimate):
  • Initial training in Spain at service start.
  • International travels to the company's HQ (Spain, Denmark or Germany) about 2-5 times/year.
