Director of Engineering

Overview
Surprise HR, Inc. is looking for a Director of Engineering to join our Product team and help us grow to triple our current eng headcount. This means you will help design, develop, ship and measure features across the company’s entire product pipeline. At Surprise HR we believe in assigning responsibilities along functional lines, so expect to own the entire process, from speccing features to architecting high level components to code completion and successful launch. About You
You’re a seasoned engineering leader who has experience growing teams of talented engineers and then empowering and trusting them to ship great work. You’re used to being responsible for building reliable, scalable, secure and highly performant technology stacks using industry best practices. You'll ensure our architecture is flexible and scalable to allow for our rapid growth into new business lines. Your passion in life is building an engineering org that can match our audacious products goals by having a team of exceptional engineers who are able to ship robust, reliable, well-designed code at break-neck speed.

Requirements
  1. Bachelor’s Degree from a Top-5 Computer Science Program (Berkeley, Stanford, MIT, Carnegie Mellon, Caltech)
  2. 3-5 years experience as either a Software Engineer or Software Architect
  3. 2-3 years experience managing a team of engineers, preferably an entire eng org
  4. Expert knowledge of Ruby on Rails, Javascript, Postgres, and Heroku/AWS
  5. Technical proficiency in the scaling, security, and performance of enterprise applications, preferably with previous experience in consumer products
  6. Deep experience implementing engineering, management, and process best practices within a rapidly growing team
  7. Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast- paced, deadline driven environment
  8. Experience with globally distributed teams
  9. Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal
