Overview:
At Surprise HR, we’re committed to hiring builders who are inspired by our team’s guiding principle: to derive a tremendous sense of purpose from the inner quest for excellence itself, being driven from within to make anything we touch be the best it can be.
Surprise HR is looking to upend employee engagement through impossibly-robust software. To make that happen we need engineers with industry-defining talent and an unrestrained drive to deliver flawless results. This role offers tremendous opportunities to build a highly scalable, highly stable, trivially maintainable back-end architecture; to push the boundaries of fault-tolerant programming; and to work with a broad range of public and proprietary APIs.
Your impact:
As a Back End Engineer at Surprise HR, you will have the greatest impact on the breadth of capabilities our solution will provide. If you're the kind of software developer who is hyper-focused on service availability, driven to extract maximum system performance, and "can't have too much data" then this is the role for you.

- Building light-weight, robust, platform-agnostic RESTful APIs
- Designing an easy-to-maintain, easy-to-extend back end infrastructure

- Implementing new features per our product team's needs and specifications
Requirements:
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, ideally with a concentration in high-performance computing
- Ideally from a top-5 Computer Science Program (Berkeley, Stanford, MIT, Carnegie Mellon, Caltech)
- Advanced Ruby on Rails and Javascript skills
- Knowledge of PostgreSQL and Redis
- Experience with AWS, Heroku, or similar cloud service providers
- Experience with Docker or other container solutions
- Experience with automated unit and user story testing
Nice to haves:
- Experience contributing along the full stack (Rails, Postgres, Javascript, HTML, CSS)
- Experience working within a geographically dispersed team
- Demonstrated ability to expertly manage conflicting priorities
- High-bandwidth, high-energy, competitive, and creative individual
- Driven to outperform; dedicated to self-improvement
