Springfield Prep Charter School is a new public charter school in Springfield, Massachusetts that opened in the 2015-16 school year and will serve students in grades K-5 in the 2019-20 school year.  We will grow to ultimately serve nearly 500 students in grades K-8.  We are driven by the belief that all children deserve a world-class education and that they can and will achieve when provided with high expectations, rigorous curriculum, and a joyful school culture.

Job Description

Associate Teachers (ATs) teach pull-out academic support groups of 1-10 students, provide coverage of classes when teachers are absent, and provide limited support to students with behavioral challenges.  Over the course of the year, ATs will follow a sequence of gradually increasing teaching responsibilities so that they are ultimately able to deliver the full curriculum independently and confidently.  ATs receive extensive training and support, including weekly one-on-one coaching, in order to develop the teaching skills necessary to develop into a full-time teacher.  This is a paid, full-time position, with benefits.

Key Responsibilities
  • Teach daily, small group (1-10 students) academic support lessons to students who would benefit from targeted remediation 
  • Substitute teach when teachers are absent/have meetings to ensure that rigorous, consistent instruction is continued even when teachers are out
  • Assist the Behavior Support Team for a limited amount of time each day by supporting students with behavioral needs in and out of class.     
  • Lead teach each component of the curriculum on a rotating basis over the course of the year 
  • Provide academic and behavioral support to students with IEPs
  • Work closely with general education and student supports teachers to differentiate curriculum 
  • Support classroom teachers to meet the needs of all students
  • Provide coverage during instructional and non-instructional time (i.e., lunch and recess supervision)

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree (required) and record of top performance as an undergraduate
  • Previous jobs, internships, and/or volunteer experiences working with children
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, and strong interpersonal skills with students, parents, colleagues, and community members

Schedule 
At Springfield Prep, students have an extended day (7:55 am to 4:00 pm).  Teachers' hours are 7:20 am to 4:20 pm with built-in planning, meeting and collaboration time.  Summer Training begins the first week of August for new staff.
