Datapower - Java Engineer

The Datapower Developer/Java Engineer’s role is to design, build, test and support Datapower XSL/XSLT products and services, and Java services and tools. 


  • Collaborate with analysts and designers in the business and technical analysis of new product features and services. 
  • Develop quality XSL/XSLT product software (components and services) hosted in IBM Datapower. 
  • Develop quality Java code for backend services or deployment tools. 
  • Work with a team in a Continuous Integration environment (leverage tools such as Jenkins) to automate, improve, and execute build, test, and deploy pipelines. 
  • Provide application coding and design alternatives. 
  • Document application specifications. 
  • Oversee the quality assurance of application logic, data processing, and error resolution, including building automated tests. 
  • Run and monitor performance tests on new and existing applications for the purposes of correcting mistakes, isolating areas for improvement, and general debugging. 
  • Administer diagnostic analysis of test results and deliver solutions to critical areas. 
  • Cultivate and disseminate knowledge of application development best practices. 
  • Automate functional and performance tests using open-source scripting tools like Serenity, Rest Assured, JMeter and SoapUI; gather statistics and summarize findings. 
  • Determine, develop, and maintain operational user manuals and guidelines. 
  • Liaise with Datapower Administrators for prompt rectification of any problems or emergencies. 
  • Liaise with network administrators, systems analysts, Datapower Administrators, and integration software engineers to resolve any defects in products or company systems. 
  • Recommend, schedule, and perform application improvements and upgrades for optimal performance. 
  • Train, manage and provide guidance to junior application development staff, and work closely with your team to continuously identify improvement opportunities in the way the team works, the output of the team, and the interactions with the project and client. 

Position Requirements 

  • Four-year college diploma or university degree in software engineering or computer science, and 5+ years equivalent work experience. 
  • Certifications in Datapower Administration and Development (XSL/XSLT development). 
  • Certifications in Java Development. 
  • Technically fluent and experience in XML and XSL/XSLT, and Java programming languages. 
  • Extensive experience in developing APIs using REST, and experience with SOAP APIs. 
  • Competent and proficient understanding of the Datapower platform. 
  • Solid working knowledge of common Internet protocols, including but not limited to HTTP/HTTPs. 
  • Hands-on Datapower troubleshooting experience. 
  • Experience at working both independently and in a team-oriented, collaborative environment is essential. 
  • Experience working on iterative agile development and on an agile team is an asset. 
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment is crucial. 
  • Proven analytical and problem-solving abilities. 
  • Must be able to learn, understand, and apply new technologies. 
  • Strong written and oral communication skills. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills. Database and operating systems experience with Unix and Oracle RDBMS is beneficial. 
  • Experience with Serenity and/or automated test systems, including REST Assured, is beneficial. 
  • Customer service skills an asset. 
  • Highly logical. 
  • Highly self-motivated and directed. 
  • Keen attention to detail. 

Work Conditions 

  • Onsite presence is required (generally 4 days per week); customer location is Scarborough Ontario. Remote access is available. 
  • Overtime hours may very occasionally be required to meet project deadlines. 
  •  Sitting for extended periods of time. 
  •  Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, and other devices and objects. 
  •  Physically able to participate in training sessions, presentations, and meetings. 
  • Minimal travel inside the Greater Toronto Area; may be required to assist with Production Datacenter installation and support.
