Ede Wageningen Portal Curator

About the Position

Portals are immersive audio-visual environments in public spaces such as schools, parks, tech hubs, refugee camps, and universities. A Portal is a gold-painted shipping container equipped with advanced digital technology, which is connected to a network of more than 40 Portals, spread across the world. When you step inside, you come face-to-face with someone in a distant Portal, live and full-body, and engage as if in the same room. Portals connect communities around the globe; they bring together tastemakers, experts, and concerned citizens.

Ede and Wageningen are joining forces with a testing ground to connect art, science and the innovative food sector in our region. We are setting up a Portal this autumn. With the testing ground we aim to build stronger networks and improve the cultural offering while making it more visible.

As project curator you will be responsible for programming the Portal together with your colleagues in other Portals and the head office. At the same, you’ll start building a network between influencers and cultural organizations from Ede and Wageningen and parties such as Wageningen University, the Christelijke Hogeschool Ede, schools and innovative food enterprises in the region.  You will encourage tastemakers, entrepreneurs and scientists to start a dialogue and ultimately join forces and develop innovative programs.  Much of this will take place in our Portal.

 In this role, you will:

  • Program Dialogues & Events, including coordinating talks, performances, cultural and culturally educational activities whereby you encourage the sharing of knowledge and collaboration in art, science and food, both regionally and internationally.

  • Outreach in the Community, including mobilising influencers and cultural organizations, food players, schools and residents of Ede and Wageningen, coordinating videographers and social media, occasionally shooting video yourself and liaise with the press

  • Building and growing networks, with a focus on growing the network in the cultural sector. At the same time, you’ll work on enduring connections between tastemakers and other players in the region (notably academia and the agrifood sector) including scientists, teachers, students, farmers, chefs, small and large businesses, activists and other residents of Ede and Wageningen

  • Operate the Portal, including opening and closing the Portal, mastering technology and troubleshooting, ushering individuals into the Portal, talking to passersby, and explaining the Portals initiative.

  • Assist in monitoring our objectives and key indicators (including community building and a growth of cultural initiatives)

 You have

  • Experience with programming, coordination and communication
  • Very good social and communication skills, including connecting people from different professions and backgrounds
  • Attention to detail, particularly around scheduling and logistics
  • Creative skills in order to work with a wide variety of stakeholders and initiatives, while helping them to enhance & strengthen their ideas and collaborations
  • Responsible, results-oriented, and self-motivated
  • Proven experience in growing networks between different parties
  • Knowledge of and your own network in the arts and the (local) cultural sector, and are able to familiarize yourself quickly with what’s happening in the local sector
  • Affinity with themes such as food, health and ‘global challenges’ in respect of sustainability, for example
  • Cultural entrepreneurship, knowledge of business models, ability to see opportunities for sponsorship and fundraising
  • Flexible schedule since we work across various time zones: sometimes the Portal will be open early in the day or late in the evening
  • Comfort with computers, VOIP systems, and social media appreciated
  • Fluency in Dutch and English, as you will need this to communicate both internationally and with local groups.

We offer:
  • A job in a dynamic work environment, both local as international, with a great variety of tasks
  • The chance to work on a pioneering project for the cultural development of the region Ede-Wageningen
  • A 2-year part time contract with Shared Studios in the US for 20 hours per week, to start as soon as possible, with a competitive salary.
