London Portal Curator

Shared_Studios is looking for a small number of curious, outgoing and globally-minded ambassadors to guide members of the public through a first-of-its-kind interactive global public art exhibition from July 25 until August 4. During the exhibition, members of the public will be invited to step inside a gold-painted Portal to speak face-to-face, live and full-body with members of the public in major cities and diverse communities all around the world. All selected ambassadors will be required to attend paid training and rehearsals during July 21 - 23. This position is compensated at £15 per hour.

We are partnering with a global internet media platform to launch Portals in prominent public locations in 12 major global cities and to connect them with one another and the rest of our network around the world. Portals will be live and connected in high-profile sites in London, Los Angeles, Melbourne, Mumbai, New York, San Francisco, São Paolo, Seoul, and Tokyo among nearly 40 others. We estimate that Portals will host 30,000 global conversations during these 12 days.

The Portal Curator is the public face of this major global activation. You will represent Shared_Studios to the public while also representing your community to the world during this historic event.

Responsibilities
  • Engage with the public: talking to passersby, explaining the Portals initiative, and guiding the flow of people into and out of the Portal.
  • Operate the Portal: opening and closing the Portal each day, operating the software, and troubleshooting any minor issues that arise with the audiovisual equipment.
  • Facilitate and moderate conversations: introducing dialogue prompts, guiding the conversation, and stepping in to moderate as necessary.
  • Engage the Community: conducting outreach to different groups within the community to engage them in the Portal activation, identifying and inviting guests to participate in selected connections.

Requirements
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to engage people from diverse backgrounds
  • Comfort navigating public space activations, including crowd and situation management
  • English language fluency, as well as fluency in the local language spoken in the host community
  • Attention to detail, particularly around scheduling and logistics
  • Responsible, results-oriented, and self-motivated
  • Flexible schedule since we work across various time zones: sometimes the Portal will be open very early in the day or late in the evening
  • Comfort with computers, VOIP systems, and social media appreciated

About Shared_Studios

Shared_Studios brings together people separated by distance and difference to talk, dance, play and collaborate via Portals: immersive audio-visual environments in public spaces such as schools, parks, tech hubs, refugee camps and universities. At a time when people are retreating further into their own bubbles and tribalism is on the rise, we break down silos to create meaningful human connections between people and communities who would not otherwise have the chance to meet.

We operate more than 40 Portals in 20 countries around the world, each staffed by a real human being – a curator who facilitates dialogue and connects their community to the world. We give people everywhere a chance to tell their own story, to explore the diversity of human experience, and to connect with people unlike themselves as if they were in the same room.
