About the Position
We are looking for a new member of our team to help users get excited about Sensu by sharing your knowledge and directly or indirectly helping them get started with Sensu. You’ll be the second full-time Developer Advocate growing the #monitoringlove alongside peers in our Product, Engineering, Go To Market, and Sales teams.
Sensu is a fully distributed team with employees all over the United States and Canada. We are headquartered in Portland, Oregon (where our CEO lives, and where we have a small dedicated co-working space), and we are a registered employer in Canada. Our job postings need to have a physical location for the purposes of integration with various job platforms (e.g. Indeed.com and Monster.com), but anyone located in the United States or Canada is welcome to apply.
Responsibilities
- Engage with the Community. Become an active member of the Sensu Community, helping new and expert users alike by responding to questions or leading conversations in Discourse, Slack, and GitHub. Advocate for users by sharing feedback with our Product and Engineering teams to help improve the Sensu UX/DX.
- Contribute Content, Code, and Conference Talks. Lead our public storytelling by finding and sharing user stories from the community, or developing your own stories by demonstrating how to use Sensu with other popular tools and platforms (e.g. how to X with Sensu and Kubernetes). Become a premier contributor in the Sensu Community's growing developer ecosystem (with over 200+ plugins and growing), and hit the road to share your stories at various vendor and community conferences.
- Engage directly with Users. Interact with new and experienced Sensu users in a one-on-one capacity, from demonstrating how Sensu works in video conferences, to on-site tutorials and engineering collaborations.
- Become an ecosystem subject matter expert. Today's multi-cloud world is full of compelling technologies, frameworks, and platforms - and Sensu works with all of them! Does one of these technologies particularly appeal to you (e.g. Lambda, Kuberenetes, Istio/Envoy, Ansible, Consul, etc)? Take the time to become an expert with one or more of these components to serve as an internal SME, and/or use that expertise to help our users.
About You
Our ideal candidate will meet most of the following qualifications. Please don't disqualify yourself if you feel you are missing one or two (or three even?) of these skills – you probably have others or experiences that we didn't think to document here that may be just as valuable! We hire for strengths, not a lack of weaknesses – tells us what yours are!
Technical
- Knowledge and experience contributing to or maintaining Open Source software projects is a requirement. You will need to know your way around GitHub, and hardcore git-fu is welcome, but not required.
- Experience contributing to projects in at least one programming language (Golang, Ruby, Python, Bash, Powershell, etc – fluency is not expected). If you are dangerous enough to prototype CLI tools that leverage stdin/stdout, environment variables, JSON, and HTTP, you will be a very good fit for this job.
- IT operations or site-reliability engineering experience is a plus, hands-on with Sensu or other monitoring solutions in production environments is a major bonus.
Social
- Excellent spoken and written English.
- You are an excellent listener and love helping people (whether you’re an introvert or extrovert!).
- Sharing is in your very nature. You find an optimistic story in every success and failure, then tell it in your own well-crafted style – all mediums welcome: written, spoken, coded, and recorded (e.g. videos/podcasts).
- Be the ultimate teammate, happy to collaborate with your incredible colleagues regardless of org chart.
- Committed to work in accordance with our Code of Conduct.
Professional Development Opportunities
At Sensu, professional development is not only encouraged – it is expected. Individual career growth opportunities abound and are paid for as an employee benefit (up to $5,000 per employee per year). Looking to level up some technical ability, advance your leadership skills, or continue some education? Whether you're beginning your career or mastering your craft, Sensu will help you get to the next level of you.
Equal Opportunity Employer
Sensu does not discriminate on the basis of race, sex, color, religion, age, national origin, marital status, disability, veteran status, genetic information, sexual orientation, gender identity or any other reason prohibited by law (or human decency) in provision of employment opportunities and benefits.
Furthermore, we believe that homogeneous teams are not only boring, but also disadvantaged due to a lack of diversity (of vantage points, etc).
