Communications and Donor Relations Intern

Southwestern Medical Foundation is currently seeking a Communications and Donor Relations Intern. We are looking for the best and the brightest and are in search of bringing in new and fresh ideas that can truly impact our organization. This internship is an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience and training by supporting the Foundation’s communications and donor relations efforts, while working for a well-known public charitable corporation. Students will be able to learn firsthand from a diverse group of experienced staff members in a fast-paced, challenging environment.

Responsibilities:
The Communications and Donor Relations Intern will be responsible for the following, though additional duties may be assigned:

  • Donor Relations (50%)
    • Assist donor relations/stewardship efforts across all programs and initiatives (i.e. The Heritage Society, The Cary Council, and Annual Campaign) by helping to create specialized donor communications with helping to create specialized graphics, emails, and/or videos.
    • Perform donor and prospect research as needed including donor profiles and/or family trees
    • Support Event Management efforts including event tracking and certain event logistics
    • Provide database support by updating donor and prospect information as needed.
    • Research new donor opportunities and provide creative suggestions on how to engage new
      donors
  • Communications (50%)
    • Assist with content and photos for our annual publication.
    • Serve as a liaison between vendors as necessary.
    • Research and support opportunities to establish presence, engage influencers and grow our audience.
    • Assist with creating graphics to enhance our digital media content.
    • Create video content to support the Foundation’s content strategy, including storyboard development, production, and editing.
    • Collaborate with staff to identify and develop various communications related content and templates.
    • Assist with content development for our website, specifically web publishing via WordPress.
    • Conduct research related to communications and social media strategy best practices.

Qualifications:
  • Strong academic performance (minimum 3.0 GPA)
  • Above average computer skills, with working knowledge of Microsoft Office, WordPress and the Adobe
  • Suite
  • Superb skills in graphic design and some experience within video production/editing
  • Innovative thinker
  • Strong research skills with the ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to operate office equipment such as scanners and copy machines
  • Results-driven with the ability to meet commitments by deadlines
  • Flexible and able to adapt as priorities change
  • Creative with ability to connect with the community and current changes and trends
  • Superb verbal and written communication skills; strong editing skills

Ideal candidate is an undergraduate (junior or senior) or graduate student in Nonprofit Management, Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, Business, or related degree.

Schedule and Duration:
  • Hours may vary based on schedule of student and business needs.
  • Duration will typically be the span of an academic semester.

Compensation: Paid internship. Compensation will be commensurate with educational qualifications and related work experience.
