DevOps Engineer

Picnic’s mission is to structure the world’s medical data to make it useful. We work directly with patients to collect, digitize, and manage their complete medical records, giving them with control over their care through a personal health timeline (see demo). We also partner with biotech, genomics, and pharma companies who sponsor PicnicHealth accounts for research volunteers. Through this work we’re building the data sets that power some of today’s most cutting edge medical research. We’re going through a crazy period of 20x growth this year, coming off our recent Grand Prize finish in Google Cloud’s Machine Learning Startup Competition.

As our first dedicated DevOps Engineer, you will maintain and grow our infrastructure stack, CI/CD pipelines, and monitoring and alerting systems. You will work alongside our product engineers to improve the developer experience and production infrastructure. You will help ensure that our users’ data is safe and secure within our infrastructure. Our team is small, so you’ll need to be able to work quickly and independently, and dive into any challenge that gets thrown at you.

In our infrastructure stack today, you’d use some of the following tools: GCP, Kubernetes (GKE w/ GPU node pools, Helm), PostgreSQL, Stackdriver, Jenkins, Tensorflow.

To get a flavor for the range of projects you might work on, here’s a sample list:
  • Analyze and increase efficiency of resource utilization within cluster
  • Build efficient pipeline for training, deploying, and monitoring machine learning models
  • Parallelize CI/CD build and test steps to improve speed
  • Analyze and implement fixes for infrastructure issues identified by bug bounty program

  • Design, build, and maintain the core infrastructure used by all of Product and Engineering
  • Develop new systems and tools to improve the developer experience and velocity
  • Drive monitoring across the app and ensure reliability of an increasingly complex system
  • Harden security of the PicnicHealth infrastructure and services
  • Architect and develop solutions that will advance internal security monitoring & controls
  • Be the first line of defense against production issues
  • Benchmark performance and implement diagnostics

A candidate must have:
  • B.S. in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent experience
  • Write high quality code in a programming language (e.g. Python, JS)
  • 2+ years building production-quality infrastructure
  • Experience with building and deploying cloud-based web services
  • Comfort in unix shells

The ideal candidate:
  • Has worked with tools in our infrastructure stack
  • Has dealt with container orchestration, preferably Kubernetes
  • Takes security extremely seriously
  • Is excited by machine learning and wants to build infrastructure to support it
  • Enjoys kicking ass and saving lives
