Operations Engineer

Picnic’s mission is to structure the world’s medical data to make it useful. We work directly with patients to collect, digitize, and manage their complete medical records, giving them with control over their care through a personal health timeline. We also partner with biotech, genomics, and pharma companies who sponsor PicnicHealth accounts for research volunteers. Through this work we’re building the data sets that power some of today’s most cutting edge medical research. We’re going through a crazy period of 20x growth this year, coming off our recent Grand Prize finish in Google Cloud’s Machine Learning Startup Competition.

At Picnic’s core is the service we provide to our users: collecting their medical records and extracting information in those records. We deliver this service through a combination of software and people. We automate as much as possible, and for the rest we make our operations team as efficient as possible. A lot of our engineering work is on internal products. Figuring out the right things to build next is difficult, because it not only requires understanding the software development process, but also deeply understanding the manual process the operations team performs. Sometimes the best short-term solution will be to optimize the manual process. Sometimes you’ll be able to radically transform a process by simply tweaking an existing interface or creating a basic view on existing data. Sometimes there won’t be an easy solution and we’ll have to invest in building out new systems. As an operations engineer, those decisions will be up to you.

Responsibilities:
  • Optimize Picnic’s internal products to maximize the performance of the operations teams
  • Investigate and evaluate manual processes and develop technical solutions to improve or automate them
  • Work with the operations team to identify viable metrics and implement tracking systems
  • Be a full-stack engineer. Build, deploy, iterate. You’re responsible for what you’re building, and you have creative control over the direction you take
  • Work at the intersection of product, operations, and business to help drive strategy and decision-making around operations

A candidate must have:
  • B.S. in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent experience
  • Shipped code for 3+ years
  • Ability to translate operational needs into product features
  • An obsession with systemization and efficiency
  • Experience building for the web on the front-end and back-end

The ideal candidate:
  • Has worked on or built out products for operations teams
  • Is detail and process oriented
  • Loves absorbing ambiguity and transforming it into logical structures
  • Has built out full-stack applications, and might even dabble in design
  • Is excited by machine learning and building human-in-the-loop systems around it
  • Wants to transform healthcare through efficiency and technology
  • Enjoys kicking ass and saving lives
