Director of Business Development

Phylos is an agricultural genomics company using modern molecular genetics and computational biology to power the next generation of hemp and cannabis. Phylos provides breeding and R&D services to global partners and offers a suite of genetic services and testing solutions. Phylos is strategically positioned to provide cultivators with the tools to understand the breadth of genetics in their catalog, evaluate development of additional varieties, and drive business growth.

Position Summary:
Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Director of Business Development is responsible for identifying partnership needs, sourcing companies to partner with, identifying contacts at those companies, negotiating partnership terms, managing contract cycles, and closing partnership deals.  A successful candidate will create and launch long-term, multi-dimensional partnerships that drive strategic benefit and revenue growth for both Phylos and our partners.  This position forms deep relationships with external partners at all levels of their organization, provides a main point of contact for the partnership, and is the entry point for that partnership working with Phylos sales, marketing, R&D and breeding departments.

  • In conjunction with senior leadership, establish strategic objectives and an operational plan for partner acquisition and growth that aligns to overall business strategy
  • Identify and prioritize key strategic opportunities and conduct partner analyses to determine best path to fulfill those objectives
  • Create executive alignment and commitment on key partnership goals and strategic initiatives by maintaining access and influence with key leadership contacts both within Phylos and at partners
  • Partner with Legal to build term sheets and draft agreements as part of a streamlined path to closure
  • Partner with Marketing team to implement marketing and co-marketing opportunities (lunch-n-learns, seminars, webinars, campaigns, trade shows, events) with key partners 
  • Conduct Quarterly Business Reviews with all partners and establish growth and expansion opportunities for each partnership
  • Provide feedback to partners and Phylos leadership regarding market intelligence, competition, knowledge gaps and other valuable insights gained while working with partners
  • Identify expansion opportunities with existing partners
  • Lead deal execution for partnerships, including performing industry and company research, analyzing company impact, building financial models and performing due diligence
  • Understand and effectively communicate the Company’s value proposition
  • Define go-to market strategy with partners
  • Build relationships and communicate effectively with external customers and partners as well as internal staff at all levels of the organization
  • Maintain a database to record contacts, document opportunities, and manage progress
  • Target and establish contact with appropriate decision makers 
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications and Skills:
  •  B.S. / B.A. degree (or equivalent); MBA a plus
  •  7-10+ years of experience in strategic account sales, business development, and program execution
  •  Ability to develop highly professional proposals and presentations
  •  Experience in contract negotiations
  •  Demonstrated leadership, interpersonal skills, and client relationship building skills
  •  Very strong oral and written communication skills
  •  Ability to manage multiple priorities and work in a fast paced environment
  •  Technically savvy 
  •  Well organized and detail oriented
  •  Agriculture experience preferred
