Senior/Lead Engineer

Phylos is an agricultural genomics company using modern molecular genetics and computational biology to power the next generation of hemp and cannabis. Phylos provides breeding and R&D services to global partners and offers a suite of genetic services and testing solutions. Position Summary: 

Our team is tasked with designing, building, and managing Phylos’ technology stack. This position is focused on creating and improving Phylos’ web experience and applications. Our public facing web presence is a mix of technologies, with many greenfield possibilities and opportunities for creative data visualization. While your skills with HTML, CSS, and Javascript are top-notch, we are excited about your love of crafting beautiful web content, your proven experience building rich client-side experiences, your eye towards both accessibility and SEO, and your fluency in web architecture and standards. We look forward to learning together, sharing knowledge and opinions on current technology and best practices.


  • Own and manage Phylos’ responsive web presence
  • Respond to workflows, tasks, bugs and features in support of overall project and product requirements 
  • High level of positive collaboration with marketing/product on requirements and campaigns
  • Able to work proactively with various teams, from marketing to customer support, to gather and refine requirements
  • Estimate, define, and effectively communicate implementation schedules
  • Collaborate with designers to match visual design in line with UX principles
  • Deliver an excellent experience with clean and idiomatic markup, style, and code

We are flexible but would like to see: 

  • Mastery of HTML and CSS, adept with templating tools such as Pug
  • Excellent understanding of modern Javascript development and toolchains: Vue/React, Webpack, Babel, Cypress, Jest, etc.
  • Excellent understanding of modern CSS tools: Sass, Stylus, Less, or PostCSS
  • Strong skills with the Adobe Creative Suite or similar

While not required, we would be impressed by experience with any of the following:

  • Server frameworks: Phoenix, Express, Laravel, or Rails
  • Client data rendering: three.js, WebGL, or d3
  • Client mapping tools: Leaflet, Google Maps, ArcGIS, or Mapbox
  • Ops/deploy tools: docker, nginx, AWS
  • CMS: Prismic or similar “headless” CMS

  • BS degree or equivalent experience
  • Proven working experience in web programming
  • Ability to perform a take-home code challenge as part of the interview process
  • Ability to sit or stand at a desk in an office setting for an entire work day
  • Legally permitted to work in the United States 
  • Acceptable results on a background check
