Who We Are:
Otherland is a luxury candle startup poised at the intersection of self-care, home-care, and beauty. Otherland takes a visual-first approach to overcome the challenges of selling scent online. By working with different artists to tell stories for each new collection edition, the candle is elevated to be an experiential, consumable objet d'art.
What You'll Do:
The Design Director will be responsible for leading design, development, and delivery of all visual elements of the Otherland brand. As an inspiring team leader, the Design Director will develop and execute all aspects of the creative vision, ensure creative direction is retained throughout the whole production process, and expression in various mediums, with ownership of all online and offline design initiatives.
Art Direction
- Oversee ideation and execution of all visual elements of Otherland, from physical product to photography to digital design to in-real-life/retail experiences.
- Product Development
- Oversee visual design elements of all new product development, including concepting, sourcing illustrators, and directing artwork development.
- Photography/Video
- Work with Content Lead to art direct shoots as needed - concepting, on-set, and making selects.
- Brand
- Brand look & brand voice - and ensure successful implementation across projects, helping to maintain consistency across all channels
- Evolution of brand - Develop and maintain a strong, innovative and well-defined graphic design language for the brand. Oversee guidelines for all applications of the graphic identity of the brand including page layouts, typography and interaction design
Graphic Design
- Concepting and creation of assets in a variety of mediums.
- External materials - partnership decks, briefs, one-pagers, proposals etc
- Social media - partner with Social Content Lead to create visuals for instagram stories using images, graphics, animations, illustration
- Emails
- Ads - as needed
- Where needed, source and manage of freelancers, illustrators, and vendor talent. Continue to build relationships with the creative design community, and team internally as Otherland scales.
- Ensure consistency and quality of all graphic design output across all channels and brand touchpoints
UX/Web Design
- New pages and features - press page, long-form content/blog design
- Seasonal site updates
- Improvements and re-designs - about page, shop all, etc
- Ad landing pages
Requirements
- Degree in Graphic Design, Fine Arts or related field
- 7+ years of experience in art direction and graphic design
- Experience in physical design including packaging, offset printing, and publishing
- Experience in design integration, typography, and interactive interface design
- Abstract thinking, creative energy, confidence, self-motivation
- Knowledge and experience working with both creative and marketing teams
- An exceptional portfolio demonstrating relevant experience
- Strong organizational and collaborative teamwork skills, ability to multi-task
- Ability to work in a fast-paced setting under tight deadlines with strong project and time management skills
- Excellent presentation skills
- Knowledge of relevant tools: Photoshop, Illustrator, Microsoft Office, Keynote, Google G-Suite, etc.
