We are searching for a full-time machine learning research engineer to help us improve the capabilities our AI software products, which combine state-of-the-art perception algorithms with powerful adaptive decision-making abilities. Our products endow industrial robots with the level of autonomy needed to perform an extensive variety of useful tasks and integrate tightly with our customers’ complex software environments.
As a machine learning research engineer you will explore new and unique approaches to solving problems in the complex perception and control tasks we face. You will be involved in all stages of algorithm development, from inception and initial implementation to evaluation on our robotic platforms. You will collaborate with other machine learning researchers and engineers with expertise in deep learning, computer vision, motion planning, robotic control, and more.
We value candidates who are passionate about what they build, feel a strong sense of ownership over their work, and love being continually challenged. You are someone who cares deeply about your team so you are both direct and believe in doing what you say.
What You'll be Doing
- Thoughtfully analyzing the core problems in perception and control of robotic manipulators that we face at a holistic level and distilling the essential steps to solving them
- Collaborating with other researchers to propose specific, elegant, and efficient solutions to these problems using machine learning when appropriate
- Implementing machine learning models and efficient algorithms to realize these solutions both in simulation and on our robotic platforms
- Evaluating solution performance directly on our robotic platforms and closing the loop by modifying our algorithms and implementations
Experience and Skills You'll Need
- Ph.D. in computer science or a related field, or advanced degree and equivalent industry experience. (We also consider exceptional applicants with other backgrounds.)
- Track record of research excellence as reflected by a publication record in reputable conferences/journals
- Strong ethic of self-reliance and the initiative to do whatever is needed to solve a problem
- Ability to develop and implement complex algorithms thoughtfully and efficiently
- Proven theoretical and practical machine learning experience (particularly deep learning)
- Experience with Tensorflow or a similar deep learning framework and strong Python programming skills
- Strong communication skills and a proven ability to deliver on challenging software development tasks
- Legal authorization to work in the U.S. is required (we do sponsor H1B transfer)
Bonus if You Have
- Experience with software development tools, source control, issue tracking, continuous integration, code coverage
- Experience with 3D scene understanding and object detection/segmentation from vision
- Industrial robotics experience: motion planning, computer vision, kinematics, dynamics
- Background in reinforcement learning techniques for sequential decision making
- Experience working independently on a shared machine learning code base and infrastructure
More About Osaro
Osaro is a San Francisco-based startup applying deep learning technology to next-generation robotics applications. Some of Silicon Valley’s leading investors have backed Osaro, including Peter Thiel, Jerry Yang, and Scott Banister. Our vision is to build brains for robots on an industrial scale and we are excited and driven to see the results of our efforts operating in and interacting with the real world. We implement state-of-the-art techniques but constantly strive to build the simplest possible solution. Osaro is technique agnostic and always focused on the goal. We regularly review academic literature and techniques while steering clear of hype. We’re focused on delighting our customers with systems that work like magic.
We have a highly international team made up of expert machine learning practitioners and dedicated software and hardware engineers, which matches well with the global nature of our business. We are naturally curious, love healthy debate, and respect varying points of view. At Osaro, we strive to be champions for equality. We believe we can serve as a model for diversity in the tech industry by emphasizing policies of nondiscrimination and inclusion at every step.
