Who are we
Orbital Witness is a PropTech-meets-LegalTech startup profiling legal risk in property transactions. We’re backed by leading seed stage tech and property sector focused venture capital funds. Orbital Witness is a small but growing team of driven individuals from a diverse set of backgrounds. We work collaboratively to build a valuable product for real users in some of the largest companies across the legal, property and insurance sectors. We enjoy delighting our users and exploring new technologies to deliver fantastic product in these traditional industries.
Despite being an early stage startup with ambitious growth plans, we recognise the need for sustainable pace in order to achieve the long term vision. We work hard but we measure success on goals, not the clock, and we care deeply about making our workplace a friendly, flexible and supportive environment where everyone can learn and develop.
What are we doing
Combining backgrounds in the space industry and law, the founders started with an idea to bring the history and evolution of a property to life by reaching into the archives of satellite imagery operators. Steadily, this idea has evolved into a unique solution for real estate lawyers, combining property and legal data, imagery, and user-driven analysis to pinpoint legal risks in property transactions. Our end-goal of a completely automated assessment of legal risk in a property transaction will deliver immense value to banks, real estate investors and developers, lawyers, insurers, and residential homebuyers.
The role
We are looking for a passionate and creative Data Scientist to join the Orbital Witness team in developing our data-centric products and designing approaches to help automate the detection of legal risk in land and property.
As the first Data Scientist, you’ll have the opportunity to help shape the Data Science function and contribute to the overall data strategy of Orbital Witness. We have a diverse set of engaging data-centric challenges and this will be an excellent opportunity for a generalist Data Scientist looking to explore applying multiple techniques (such as OCR, NLP, data engineering, machine learning) to produce innovative data products.
Responsibilities
- Help design the data warehouse, data acquisition strategy and data pipeline;
- Research and experiment with different techniques to develop new and existing data products;
- Build and maintain tools to improve the efficiency of our data-related activities;
- Collaborate with the Product and Engineering teams to integrate our data products into our SaaS product offering;
- Champion quality and impact across our products and codebase;
- Collaborate in developing our data strategy and associated roadmap.
You should apply if
- You have professional experience working with Data Science in a product context;
- You have experience with data pipelines / products, ideally using tools like Python, Databricks, Jupyter notebooks
- Experience with cloud providers such as Azure, AWS or GCP will mean less of a learning curve;
- You believe automated testing is a useful tool to improve the quality of experiments and production pipelines;
- You appreciate the value of testing with real users and prefer to base performance metrics off real world usage rather than against static data sets;
- You’re comfortable working in an agile environment - starting small and shipping regularly to validate assumptions;
- You are comfortable working with relational databases (we primarily use Postgres / PostGIS);
We value diversity at Orbital Witness, and would particularly encourage applications from those who are traditionally underrepresented in tech. We’d love to hear from you even if you don’t match all of the above criteria or are seeking other opportunities that we’re not currently advertising.
