About the Role
The Communications team is responsible for branding, communications, and marketing at Opportunity@Work. This position is a full-time, paid internship. In a lean startup environment, the intern should be confident in playing multiple roles as needed and exploring opportunities to add value. We are a small but rapidly growing team. As such, the intern will have access to and work alongside all members of the organization, from the most senior to the most junior team members. The intern will participate in key meetings and will have the opportunity to take on mini-projects of their own connections to larger team deliverables.
This role will support all of our communications and marketing activities including content development, media relations, social media, and campaigns. Additionally, the communications intern will work with our team members to complete projects and special assignments.
The ideal applicant will bring knowledge of the communications, media relations, and social landscapes. The candidate should be confident, well organized, mature and bring a range of additional skills, from research and analysis, writing and content management. A willingness to take initiative and a drive to learn would be especially advantageous. A keen eye for design, excellent writing and verbal skills, and an interest in the mission of Opportunity@Work are important.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in executing communications plans involving social media, graphic design, digital production, marketing, events, and branding.
- Produce copy and assist with the creation of graphics for Opportunity@Work’s social media pages and website.
- Research news and trends in the opportunity movement daily for internal email newsletter.
- Support with researching statistics for the Opportunity Movement for digital campaigns.
- Assist with digital and social media performance analysis
- Conduct landscape tracking and analysis to identify, inventory and analyze communications of peers and partners in our work areas, including training providers, advocacy organizations, academic research institutions, and other actors.
- Contribute to messaging strategy and development of communications tools (e.g. talking points, fact sheets, etc.).
- Support creation and implementation of social media campaigns, including planning and content creation.
- Help manage weekly and monthly content and editorial calendars.
- Research and compile information to prepare the CEO and other staff for speaking events (e.g. event information, speaker bios, speech excerpts, etc.).
- Create a database for conferences and speaking events related to the Opportunity Movement space.
- Create and maintain a benchmarking tool for thought leadership activities.
- Provide general support to the Communications and other teams.
Required Skills & Experience:
- Experience with daily maintenance of social media
- Website management (e.g., Squarespace and WordPress), graphic design and marketing is a plus
- Experience or coursework in communications, journalism, marketing, graphic design or public policy is a plus
- Excellent writing and verbal skills
- Editing, proofreading, and fact-checking
- Demonstrated ability to think critically and creatively, work independently, take initiative and problem solve
- Experience in Canva, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. Background in Adobe After Effects is a strong plus.
- Familiarity with social media tools, digital engagement, and online communications platforms
- Background (or coursework) and portfolio in graphic design and/or video production a strong plus.
Proof of eligibility to work in the United States is required.
