Engineering Manager

  • $165,000.00 - $180,000.00/year
  • Octopart is looking for an Engineering Manager to join us in our mission of providing open and useful access to all aspects of electronic parts. We are constantly iterating on our industry-leading part search experience to help our users feel confident in making the final decision on the parts they need.

You will lead a team of talented software engineers and collaborate with Product, Design, Data, Marketing, and Sales to help us to deliver the best possible product. You will support, mentor, and guide members of the engineering team.

We think that it’s important for Engineering Managers to maintain a strong sense of good technical performance. To do this, we will provide support for you to make technical contributions on architectural plans, provide helpful code reviews, and write code.

We’re an entrepreneurial and supportive company whose employees genuinely enjoy working together to solve complex and interesting challenges.

    In a typical week you'll:
    • Lead a team of talented software engineers.
    • Understand the aspirations of each team member and work to match that with the needs of our projects. Ensure that team members have the opportunity to take on more responsibility in areas they are passionate about.
    • Assemble and organize project teams – collaborating with the VP of Engineering and Director of Product – considering the requirements of each project and the skills, experience, and professional development wishes of each team member
    • Grow our team by interviewing, hiring, and on-boarding diverse and talented engineers
    • Support and mentor members of the engineering team through weekly 1-on-1 meetings
    • Facilitate professional development, learning, and improvement for your team
    • Work closely with the VP of Engineering to set the quality and direction of Octopart’s website, API, part search algorithm, and data platforms.
    • Think about how we do work and build things – evaluate and introduce new technologies, processes, and procedures.

    About You:
    • 5+ years of experience in software engineering or software development
    • 2+ years of experience managing people or projects
    • You are enthusiastic about your work and use that to motivate others
    • You get satisfaction from helping others grow, develop, and learn
    • You solve team problems by providing help, support, and information; or by facilitating disambiguation and better communication
    • Eagerness and enthusiasm to dive quickly and deeply into understanding electronic parts and electronic design workflows - you may have experience with, or are drawn to, complex systems
    • A preference for well thought-out minimum viable products that can be iterated over time based on data and feedback
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills. Can communicate effectively both externally and internally, to people with or without technical expertise.
    • You demonstrate empathy, humility, and kindness. You take a thoughtful approach to technical development and people management.

    Desirable:
    • Experience with some of our stack or similar technologies: Linux, AWS, Python, Go, Javascript, HTML/CSS, Elasticsearch, MySQL
    • Experience in web development and website performance engineering

We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our company. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.
