Facility Notes: JOB DESCRIPTION/PERFORMANCE APPRAISAL--JOB TITLE|STAFF MEDICAL TECHNICIAN – MLT (Job Code 15/IHA Code 311134)-- Effective Date|May 1 1994--JOB SUMMARY| A staff technologist must be able to perform any tests available in the lab whenever they are requested by a physician. They must be proficient in the basic areas of hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, blood bank, serology, coagulation, and bacteriology, as well as demonstrate knowledge of quality control and job related clerical work. Responsible for performing any clinical Laboratory testing or procedure accurately and completing testing as quickly as possible according to the needs of the patient. Maintain all records required by various regulatory agencies, hospital and laboratory policies.-- RESPONSIBLE TO| Director of Laboratory-- SUPERVISION EXERCISED| None-- QUALIFICATIONS|-- A. Education| Associate degree from an accredited school.-- B. Experience| Prior experience as staff medical technologist is helpful but not required.-- ALTERNATIVE TO MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS| None--TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS| Requires full range of body motion including manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Requires standing for extensive periods of time. Occasionally lifts items up to four feet above the floor and weighing up to 50 pounds. Requires working alone under stressful conditions or working irregular hours. Requires working with communicable diseases or bodily fluids. Must be able to communicate both verbally and in writing. Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range. --TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS| Frequently works with communicable diseases, toxic substances, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a laboratory environment. --POSITION COMPETENCY EVALUATION --JOB FUNCTIONS AND POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES--Performs specialized automated and non-automated laboratory techniques on laboratory samples according to policy.--Performs Quality Control procedures within established parameters. --Acts as a resource person for problems involving patient testing or transfusion medication.--Provide technical education and guidance to phlebotomists and students by overseeing work performance in support of educational programs resulting in a continuous learning environment.--Works effectively and safely as a team member, both departmentally and organization-wide, to provide quality service through communication, cooperation and collaboration.--Maintains flexibility required adapting to laboratory needs as related to scheduling.--Other duties as assigned.
