Data technician

Key Characteristics:
mySidewalk’s next data tech will empower our customers to move from talking spreadsheets to crafting stories. This role will impact the way we acquire data, how we systematically format data across customer segments and improving the visual capabilities of our product. With a focus on the detailed, tedious work and an eye for process improvement, our next data tech will help us improve our customers’ workflow while taking on the work they cannot do today. Experience in data handling, data analysis, technology, government or consultant work is a plus. 

The kind of problems you’ll help us solve:
  • How might we best understand our customer's data challenges?
  • How might we collect, clean and wrangle data into actionable insights?
  • How do we continue to improve the customer data experience? 

How you’ll solve those problems:
  • Incorporate customer insight into the data implementation process.
    • Through good data governance, thorough data review, and proper documentation, help to ensure the customer has confidence in the data, analysis, and insight mySidewalk produces to enable the customer’s organization to realize their goals
  • Acquire high-value datasets for the customer. 
    • Execute on Data Acquisition Plans for each customer project and efficiently acquire project-specific data using knowledge of high-quality civic data sources 
    • Identify data issues, including incompleteness, inconsistencies, inaccuracies and other concerns and work with the internal team to resolve
    • Master critical parts of the lifecycle of customer data projects, including data acquisition & processing; analysis & visualization; and updates & maintenance
  • Discover and communicate key insights through analysis.
    • Conduct exploratory data analysis to discover important insights into the customer’s problem or issue that will help drive the narrative communicated in the final product
    • Transform and map data from one raw form into another format to make it more appropriate and valuable for a variety of downstream purposes such as analytics 
    • Evangelize data stewardship, pursue data quality, and relentlessly drive data issues to resolution. Help identify information gaps and champion improvements.

  • Have an affinity for diving into complex datasets, organizing them, and making them valuable
  • Superior attention to detail with strong organizational and project management skills
  • Excellent communication skills, both with internal teams and customers
  • Desire to take ownership of tasks, work independently, and meet deadlines
  • A curious and inquisitive approach to problem-solving 
  • Have a Bachelors or Masters degree in a relevant field is highly preferred
  • Experience in data handling, data analysis, and technology
  • Experience writing data processing pipelines using modern programming methods such as Python, R and Jupyter Notebooks
