Mimir is looking for a Senior Front-End Engineer!

Mimir is Y Combinator and venture backed startup in Indianapolis, Indiana focused on creating products to better computer science education. We’re hiring rapidly to help us meet the education needs of instructors and students all over the world. Our primary product, Mimir Classroom, is deployed in dozens of universities and allows computer science instructors to teach their courses more effectively.

We're only hiring on-site in Indianapolis, but we will pay for relocation and help you find housing, and our entire interview process can be done remotely.

The Role
You'll work directly with the founders of Mimir to help improve the user experience of our Classroom product. Our primary product's front-end is written in React.js and the back-end is written in Ruby on Rails. As a front-end engineer, you'll be working heavily with React, so experience with React is highly valued. 

In a typical work week, you'll find yourself working closely with the engineering team to plan, assign, and develop features that improve the experience of students and instructors using our platform. Your input will be highly valued when we make decisions about technologies, task planning, and company direction.

Requirements
  • 4+ years of experience in web development for the frontend
  • Thorough experience with Javascript, HTML, and 
  • Experience working with a design or product team to tailor interfaces for maximum usability.
  • Experience working with other developers to highlight eachother's talents and produce great code together
  • OPTIONAL: Thorough experience in a functional language or functional javascript

We want developers who think critically and ask questions. Hunger for knowledge and the ability to learn fast are extremely important qualities in a Mimir team member. Above all, the ability to learn, discuss, and understand new concepts is the most valuable skill for a Mimir employee. 

We value code correctness, readability, and elegance over speed. Efficient code is important, but it should never come at the cost of an ugly codebase.

We love to talk tech. Our engineering staff is constantly discussing new technologies, libraries, and frameworks even when we have no immediate use for them. We consider interest in the quickly moving tech world to be a valuable trait which will help us make critical technology decisions as we grow.

Skills and Concepts
Mastery in these concepts is not required, but will give you a leg up on the competition
  • Javascript, the DOM, and the event loop
  • React.js and it's functional principles
  • ES6/7/8 and modern Javascript practices
  • Functional programming principles, techniques, and advantages
  • Styling HTML with CSS, including the quirks and subtleties of styling with CSS
  • Modern CSS, including Flexbox and CSS Grid
  • Basic understanding of Git
  • Strong static typing
  • While you'll mostly be working on the front end, experience in the rest of our tech stack is beneficial: 
    • Database: PostgreSQL
    • Back-end: Ruby on Rails
    • Front-end: React, SCSS, Webpack
    • Testing: RSpec, Puppeteer, Jest
    • Infrastructure: Amazon S3, EC2, RDS
