Head of Merchandising 

We’re looking for a builder. A merchant with enough experience to thoughtfully expand our line and drive our business forward. Marine Layer is a fast-growing brand with a unique style in a time when the traditional rules of retail are constantly being amended. We need someone who isn’t stuck to a  traditional playbook from another company.

This role is for a Sr. Director or VP. We’re growing fast, we have some flexibility and our organization will always prioritize the right candidate over the exact right level of experience.  

We have a fleet of almost 50 stores, a fast-growing e-commerce business, and are launching with strategic wholesale partners.  We have built a great business, but we have plenty more to come.  

The successful candidate for this position will play a critical role in driving our expanding (and increasingly complex) business forward, increasing the impact of our merchandising department across all facets of the business.  They are expected to be a senior leader in our organization, and will work as a key conduit between the product team and the rest of the company.  

Additionally, this person will help us strategically grow our assortment and play an integral role in determining the architecture of the line.  He or she will work closely with planning and design to determine new areas of growth and ways to improve our line regionally. This is a unique role that has elements of marketing, strategic planning and assorting. 

Key responsibilities include:
  • Rollup to and work closely with CEO
  • Successfully manage and develop a team of 2 to 3 other merchants
  • Develop roadmap and line plan to strategically drive business results
  • Recommend seasonal and core product assortment mix to guide design team and capitalize on existing business as well as potential new opportunities. Partner with Design to assort line and present to leadership.
  • Partner with planning to determine new areas of growth, rank and plan the line, set pricing strategy and interpret and act on our sales data.
  • Create and implement new retail tiering strategies for our expanding fleet, with emphasis on small/large format stores, climate and geographical differences, and demonstrated sales.
  • Shape key seasonal product stories and work closely with Marketing, PR and Retail teams to communicate and bring to life in our creative assets and catalog.
  • Work closely with the field to obtain and interpret customer feedback
  • Create and implement a Third Party goods assortment strategy

You should know the brand, like the brand, and be able to represent our aesthetic in an authentic way while also pushing our assortment forward. We need you to execute and implement brand strategies in creative ways that will resonate with our core customer.

This is a results driven position that will require someone who can lead and organize many different cross-functional initiatives, working closely with all of the different teams across the organization.  

A Drive To Build Something Great
Hmmm, how to say this politely, we ain’t Levis or the Gap. We’re on the precipice of something really special, but we’re not there yet. The road ahead is going to be challenging and we’re looking for someone who embraces that and is eager to play a key part in getting us to the next level.

A Fantastic Communicator and Analyst
You need to be organized, self-motivated and accountable. The successful candidate for this position will be analytical and organized with excellent communication skills and an ability to combine complex analysis with market knowledge to produce actionable recommendations
