Senior Director of Retail

We’re looking for an inspirational leader. Someone who can continue to build upon the success of the store fleet we have built over the last decade, while recognizing that we have plenty of room to grow.  The successful candidate for this position is people-obsessed and will play a critical role maintaining company culture in a retail fleet of almost 50 stores.  They are also expected to be a senior leader in our organization, and will work as a key conduit between the store team, cross functional teams, and senior management.

Additionally, this person will be required to execute strategic department initiatives that drive value in the retail channel.  To do so, he or she will work closely with Finance, Planning, Real Estate, Merchandising, Marketing and HR, and will act as an air traffic controller to determine ways to improve both customer experience, employee experience and profitability in our stores.

The candidate who will thrive in this position has a deep passion for humans, learning the business, building community and bringing people together.  Specifically, he or she will...
  • Create and implement strategies for employee retention, succession planning and employee development.  Employee management is paramount in this position, and priority #1 for our Sr Director of Retail
  • Marry our unique company culture with an elevated customer experience in the most ML way possible.  This is tied for priority #1 and is much easier said than done
  • Successfully manage four retail functions, including Real Estate, Store Leadership, Retail Operations and Visual Merchandising
  • Improve existing fleet performance and productivity by understanding current performance levels and nuances between stores across the country
  • Define strategy, investment plan and road map to drive sustainable, profitable growth, focusing on increasing comp store sales and 4-wall contribution of retail stores
  • Design and roll out tiered store tests, with emphasis on staffing in small/large format stores, sales training,  new tools/technologies and store design to deliver improved customer service, elevated retail experience and a seamless omnichannel experience
  • Work closely with Marketing to communicate and bring to life our brand stories
  • Partner with Finance on payroll management and schedule optimization
  • Partner with Planning to improve in-stock rates and inventory productivity
  • Partner with HR to investigate and help resolve employee relations matters

Qualifications – It bodes well if you are:

An Authentic Brand Advocate
You should know the brand, like the brand, and be able to represent our aesthetic in an authentic way, while acting as the protector of company culture.  Maintaining ML's unique company culture is the #1 priority across the fleet.

A Confident and Inspirational Leader
250 employees on the store team will look up to you as their fearless leader and champion of all things retail.  You must have the ability to inspire, ability to motivate and natural tendency to empathize with and rally others.  When the going gets tough, the retail team will look to you for guidance and direction (and they will take their emotional cues from you, so you need to lead with compelling confidence).

Driven To Build Something Great
Hmmm, how to say this politely, we ain’t Levis or the Gap.  We’re on the precipice of something really special, but we’re not there yet. This is a results-driven position that will require someone who roll up their sleeves and make things happen.  We are lean team, so this position needs someone who can leverage existing resources and organize many different cross-functional initiatives, working closely with many different teams across the organization.

A Fantastic Communicator
You need to be organized, self-motivated and accountable. The successful candidate for this position will be analytical and organized with excellent communication skills, and will maintain a forward-thinking, enthusiastic attitude 9.5 times outta 10.

Scrappy
We are a very lean organization and we’re looking for someone to support the development of strong process and strong teams across a large retail fleet. This is a great opportunity and also a great burden. The right person probably sees more opportunity than burden…

  • Demonstrated leadership with ability to lead and influence at all levels
