Association of Independents in Radio - CEO

The Association of Independents in Radio seeks a leader for our individual association, which supports the work of our 1,300 Members in the US and across the world.

AIR marks its 30th anniversary year with an expanding network of independent and mission-focused media makers, central to the podcast and digital audio boom and driving journalistic innovation across public media. AIR’s Localore productions have opened new space for gifted talent and local collaborators to enrich communities across the U.S. AIR’s recruitment and mentoring programs strengthen and expand the media ecosystem with work that brings hope and enlightenment, with the power to embolden and unify.

With a particular expertise in audio, we hear what is not apparent, seek what may be hidden, and craft stories that reflect a full spectrum of human experience. The Opportunity: We seek a powerful, visionary, inclusive leader who will continue growing AIR’s economic sustainability, as well as our effectiveness in serving our mission, including supporting our members through expanding opportunities and compensation, enhancing the craft through developing and delivering training opportunities, providing educational resources and networking opportunities (such as the AIR Daily), with the result of our work being to empower our Members to do their best work.

 The CEO reports to the AIR Board of Directors and will be directly responsible for all organizational activities by providing an innovative, creative and strategic vision for AIR. We are seeking a leader who excels at community engagement and partnership building, and who delivers effective fundraising leadership. The CEO plans and oversees the annual budget, making sure our goals and financial targets are reached. 

Our offices and current four-person staff are located in Boston. While we anticipate remaining in that location and will support relocation of our new leader, we are willing to consider exceptional candidates who are unable or unwilling to relocate.

We seek a diplomatic, customer service oriented, experienced and mission-driven individual, with a mature set of leadership and management abilities, who will grow and maintain a positive, aligned internal culture at AIR and keep the organization improving in effectiveness in serving our Members. We seek a leader who has great people skills, who puts the mission and success of AIR first, is politically savvy and diplomatic and is a powerful advocate for our Members.

Excited about generating financial resources for AIR. Effective fundraiser with demonstrated track record, knowledgeable of and expert at the CEO role in fundraising and resource development. Our ideal leader will be strong as a mission spokesperson and in the relationship management aspects of fundraising, who conceptualizes and communicates powerful ideas in writing and in person that result in unrestricted and project funds that support the mission of AIR. Our leader will also be responsible for continuing to grow our organizational fundraising capacity as well as diversify our income streams. 
Strategic Focus: 
We want a person with a powerful understanding of and use of strategy in organizational life to achieve the vision of AIR, who has demonstrated experience with the full range of strategic and business planning and building strategic alliances. They champion strategic perspectives, is data driven and networks and benchmarks other organizations to increase AIR’s organizational effectiveness.

Industry Knowledge: 
Our expectation is to attract a person with an expert level of media knowledge including trends in technology and consumption of media. We are looking for a leader who is technologically competent themselves and is knowledgeable with dynamics and trends in audio and multimedia production, podcasting and commercial and public service media. Our preferred candidate is knowledgeable about issues related to non-profits and associations.

Is action-oriented, entrepreneurial and adaptable, with innovative approaches to creating direction for AIR, including programs and activities that serve our Members. Our ideal candidate is personally creative and able to act on that creativity (may be a maker themselves), is effective at brainstorming, is a good learner and is not risk averse.

In the context of the impact digital revolution on availability and use of media, particularly the opportunity represented in the current podcasting phenomena, display ability to project AIR’s and our member’s needs out into the long-term future; see and understand future trends in media, in related fields and the world, and the impact on AIR. We are looking for a leader who is a big picture person, with a learning orientation, who balances vision with doing and is able to enroll others in working together to develop and execute a shared vision.

A persuasive and passionate communicator with outstanding interpersonal skills, skilled at minimizing unhelpful conflict and able to inspire Staff, Stakeholders and Members, and is inspiring and respectful, connecting in a real way with people. Our ideal leader has comfort and command with the full range of communication skills, including speaking, writing, social media and presentation skills, and is an effective spokesperson

One of AIR’s most important assets is the trust our Members have in our organization. The AIR CEO will be a courageous, ethical person with strong self-awareness, with clear, high standards for him or herself, and understand and practice confidentiality when called for, as well as organizational and financial transparency.

Management/Team Management: 
A selected candidate will be an experienced, results oriented manager of people who is both expert at and enjoys the internal, team building aspects of the CEO role. He or she will need to demonstrate strong internal relationship skills and experience with supervising a staff, including proven skill and commitment to growing and mentoring staff members and is not a micro-manager.
