Registered Dietition

DESCRIPTION OF WORK:

The Registered Dietitian (RD) shall provide services within scope of practice as defined by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The work is performed in coordination with the Soldier Readiness Test & Training Program (SRT2P) team at designated United States Army Forces Command (FORSCOM) locations in Military Treatment Facilities (MTF). The RD shall report to the Battalion (BN) SRT2P Coordinator. The RD shall function as an integrated member of a BN-based, multi-disciplinary team focused on optimizing military mission readiness and performance through medical availability and task specific performance by providing and facilitating force health protection in support of military operations and patient/casualty care. The RD will be required to observe BN specific training events (e.g., shooting ranges, obstacle courses, combatives training). Be physically able to hike in austere environment and terrain (i.e. rocky, no running water, no shelter, no bathroom, no climate control, inclement weather, loud, smoky) while carrying their own backpack with necessary supplies. Be physically able to lift and manipulate loads and weight plates up to 45 pounds.

DESCRIPTION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

The candidate shall...

  • Possess any relevant Bachelor’s Degree with four years of relevant experience (during the last five years) from a college or university accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND), OR 
  • Possess any relevant Master’s Degree from a college or university accredited by ACEND with two years of relevant experience (during the last five years), OR 
  • Possess certification of completion of a Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) accredited by the ACEND, OR 
  • Possess certification of completion of a post-Baccalaureate degree Dietetic Internship Program of supervised practice (for a minimum of 1200 hours) accredited by ACEND

DESCRIPTION OF CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

The candidate shall...

  • Possess current registration as a Registered Dietitian from the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR), the credentialing agency for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics 
  • Possess a current, active, valid, and unrestricted state license in any of the 50 Unites States, the District of Colombia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam, or the U.S. Virgin Islands.
  • Possess current valid certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) with AED certification from the American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Providers
  • Possess certification as a Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD). NOTE: The candidate can request a waiver who do not possess the CSSD but meet all other qualifications. Those individuals must obtain the CSSD certification within one year at no cost to the Government.

DESCRIPTION OF TASKS:

The candidate shall...

  • Analyze nutrient intake on an electronic medium. 
  • Be able to electronically enter information into medical files/electronic health record.
  • Attend BN physical training sessions in order to assess physical demands, determine the nutritional requirements, and make recommended plan to the SRT2P team on nutritional strategies to improve physical performance.
  • Screen, assess, conduct, and interpret body composition for individual Soldiers and BNs.
  • Assess body composition through circumference measurements in accordance with (IAW) Army Regulation 600-9, Army Body Composition Program, and other public health guidelines.
  • Interpret results within context of Army regulations, public health guidelines and scientific literature for the achievement and maintenance of foundational health and optimal task and environment specific performance.
  • Assess and interpret energy intake, energy expenditure, and hydration results within context of Army regulations, public health guidelines and scientific literature for the achievement and maintenance of foundational health and optimal task and environment specific performance.
  • Make individual Soldier and BN group recommendations, based on assessments for expected nutritional demands. 
  • Synchronize recommendations with the BN military training plan/calendar in context of lifestyle and organizational culture.
  • Order appropriate biochemical and physiological tests IAW Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics practice guidelines, sports nutrition best practices, and as privileged by the local MTF. Interpret results in the context of foundational health; chronic disease and condition prevention; optimal task-specific physical performance; and injury control, illness rehabilitation, reconditioning, and recovery.
  • Provide medical nutrition therapy and, as needed; coordinate with MTF based Nutrition Care Providers.
  • Perform nutrient analysis of dietary intake using computer programs and published dietary data.
  • Translate current public health guidelines and BN commander’s physical performance guidance into nutrition education through print, electronic, and BN approved social media platforms that are tailored to the organizational culture and size of the BN.
  • Develop and conduct education sessions to individuals and groups of various sizes (up to 500+) with or without audiovisual aides.
  • Integrate nutrition education into SRT2P team education sessions that are synchronized and integrated with the BN military training plan/calendar.
  • Conduct nutrition training sessions for BN fitness leaders, Nutrition Care Specialists (68M), Combat Medics (68W), Culinary Specialists (92G) and other Soldiers to standardize nutrition messages across the BN in accordance with current evidence-based practice standards, practice guidelines, and scientific nutrition research.
  • Conduct nutrition training sessions for BN medical providers, SRT2P team members, logistics and training leaders, chaplains, and BN leadership through established and novel BN training forums.
  • Recommend and integrate nutrition strategies with SRT2P team functions that support military operations and training events.
  • Provide RD supplies and equipment recommendations to the SRT2P team for approval by BN SRT2P Coordinator. Provide feedback to SRT2P team regarding RD supplies and equipment utilization and needs.
  • Participate in periodic and routine meetings with the SRT2P team to review and evaluate the nutrition services provided to Soldiers, discuss medical issues of concern that affect safe and appropriate Soldier care, identify existing problems, identify opportunities to improve delivered care, and provide recommendations for corrective action.
  • Document in the Soldier’s official electronic health record any encounter involving the observation, treatment or care of a medical condition in accordance with Army Regulation 40-66, Medical Records Administration and Health Care Documentation.
  • Furnish data and reports, and make all records available for contract surveillance review as requested by the BN SRT2P Coordinator. 
  • Participate as a contributing member of the SRT2P team on issues related to body composition, nutrition environment, fueling, and nutrition status for optimal performance, rehabilitation and recovery.
  • Review RD-specific equipment, product, and literature to assist SRT2P team in incorporating emerging best practices.
  • Participate in peer reviews.
  • Attend and participate (i.e. answer questions, provide updates/presentations, receive Commander’s intent) in meetings with other SRT2P team members and BN leadership as requested and/or required. 
  • Ensure safe and effective operation of equipment used for patient/Soldier care and contribute to a safe working environment.
  • Follow mandatory Government training in accordance with Army regulations, MTFs and BN policies.
  • Perform clinical, administrative, and other tasks, within the RD scope of the practice and in line with the designated roles of the BN SRT2P team members.
  • Collect and report data as requested/required by the BN SRT2P Coordinator.
