Director of Construction

Job Purpose:
The Director of Construction will provide oversight, guidance, and management to all EPC operational functions. This person will personally project manage 1-3 projects at a time. This person will manage the Project Management team, oversee all big picture planning, hiring, and budgeting. With a focus on safety and quality control, this person will help Joule construct and realize over 100 MW of solar installations within their first year. 

Role & Responsibilities:
  • Project Management Team Management 
    • Provide weekly feedback to all project managers
    • Provide post-project feedback to all Project Managers and Assistant Project Managers
    • Communicate bonus pool status to project managers
    • Propose PM Team promotion and salary changes for Director approval
  • Project Management Oversight
    • Review and troubleshoot weekly plans provided by project managers
    • Assist in creation of risk mitigation plans for all identified project risks
    • Review all resource plans created by project teams.  Approve requests or re-balance resources across teams as necessary
    • Assign projects to project teams based on capacity and skill fit
    • Approve all mobilizations and demobilizations of field resources
    • Review and approve all subcontracts and POs larger than project manager’s signature authority
    • Review all change orders and assist in client conversations regarding change orders
  • Field Management Hiring and Reviews
    • Hiring 
      • Review resumes
      • Conduct phone and in person interviews of screened resumes applicants
      • Create and manage assessments of skill level in warehouse work
      • Decide whether or not to “pre-qualify” field personnel and classify
      • With project teams, make initial project contract offers
    • Manage all field personnel as direct reports.
      • Create and maintain records of post-project feedback, infractions, etc. for all field crew members  Summarize feedback across the organization
      • Provide summary feedback to field crew members and recommendations for reclassification after first 30 days
      • Provide summary feedback to field crew members bi-annually
      • Propose changes to promotions and pay rates for director approval, and make offers during bi-annual reviews
  • Reporting
    • Report to directors on project performance, including schedule, budgets, and client satisfaction
    • Analyze field inefficiencies and suggest process improvements
  • Safety
    • Administer and ensure enforcement of Joule site safety plan
    • Debrief all near misses and incidents with 5 why methodology
    • Maintain OSHA logs
  • Quality control
    • Ensure quality control plan is followed by project teams 
    • Review all checklists and submittals
    • Review all project photos
    • Suggest additions/revisions/improvements to QC Manager
  • Recruitment and Hiring
    • Field team
      • Personally interview and on-board/pre-qualify all installers (screened by PMs) 
      • Ensure all on-boarding requirements are met 
        • All required software installed and operational
        • All tools purchased by installers or ordered by Joule, inventoried, tracked, and provided to installer
        • All required safety trainings performed
        • All required field trainings performed
  • PMs and Assistant PMs
    • Participate in in-person interviews
    • Assess strengths and weaknesses of candidates, decide on initial team assignments

  • Bachelor’s preferred
  • 3-5 years of construction management experience
  • Demonstrated attention to detail
  • Experience with maintaining multiple project schedules with many complex parts
  • Very high level of written and oral communication
  • Technical Proficiencies
    • Advanced understanding of Google Docs, Google Sheets and Excel
    • Advanced understanding of project management and scheduling system
    • Experience with Salesforce
    • Experience with Gmail
