Located in the redwoods near Santa Cruz, California, the Joby Aviation team has been steadily working toward our goal of providing safe, short-hop, fully electric air transportation that is accessible to everyone. Imagine an air taxi that takes off vertically, then quietly and quickly carries you over the congestion below, giving you back that time you’d otherwise spend sitting in traffic. Technology has advanced to the point where designing and operating an all-electric aircraft is completely viable. Our team has been discreetly designing and flight testing this vehicle and is looking for talented engineers to see it through certification and high rate production.
User safety and experience are critical aspects of our endeavor. To that end, we are seeking a motivated individual to join our analysis team working specifically on occupant seats. This individual will work in collaboration with the design team and be performing static, quasi-static, and buckling analysis and hand analysis of seating components. This role will involve analysis work starting at hand analysis, FEA for stress and interface loads, and testing for regulatory static load cases. A strong knowledge of FEA of aircraft seats and passenger seat certification requirements is required. Hands-on experience, a ‘get it done’ attitude, and the ability to work well with a cross-functional team is needed. This position is rewarding, as the engineer will promptly see their ideas grow from concept to creation due to the fast pace of Joby Aviation.
Responsibilities:
- Review seat design CAD data.
- Set up models for static, quasi-static, and buckling simulations using commercial FEA software.
- Generate interface loads for airframe team.
- Perform FEA on detail parts and assemblies to verify compliance to occupant safety requirements.
- Document design validation work.
- Provide status and schedule updates to lead and other appropriate entities on a regular basis.
Required:
- B.S. in relevant discipline
- 5+ years of working experience in relevant industry
- Strong background in basic structural engineering such as free body diagrams and strength of materials.
- Mastery of finite element analysis and fatigue methods.
- FEA experience in linear and buckling simulations using commercial FEA package.
- Must be able to generate technical reports.
- Certification experience to FAR Part 23/25/27/29.
- Basic experience with commercial CAD software.
- Proficiency in mechanical design, materials selection, troubleshooting, and analysis.
- Excellent teamwork and communication skills.
Desired:
- M.S. in relevant discipline.
- 5+ years of working experience in relevant industry.
- Experience with Dassault Systemes CATIA Surfacing, Part Design, and Assembly Design.
- Knowledge of stochastic/statistical tools (DOE) and Optimization tools.
