Senior Analyst - Methods and Standards

Located in the redwoods near Santa Cruz, California, the Joby Aviation team has been steadily working toward our goal of providing safe, short-hop, fully electric air transportation that is accessible to everyone. Imagine an air taxi that takes off vertically, then quietly and quickly carries you over the congestion below, giving you back that time you’d otherwise spend sitting in traffic. Technology has advanced to the point where designing and operating an all-electric aircraft is completely viable. Our team has been discreetly designing and flight testing this vehicle and is looking for talented engineers to see it through certification and high rate production. 

Joby Aviation is seeking a senior methods and standards engineer to join our growing stress and analysis team. This role is a key position within the team as the company quickly moves towards FAA certification. The applicant will be expected to create standards and procedures for substantiation of various types of aircraft structural components. Candidates are expected to have extensive experience in stress analysis for aircraft and be intimately familiar with FAA regulations and existing standards. Prior experience with small aircraft certification is a must. The selected candidate will have a unique opportunity to have a high-level influence Joby’s design and analysis standards.

  • Strategically break down the aircraft into components, sub-components and design details for substantiation through a building block approach
  • For each type of detail, establish substantiation processes aligned with FAA standards
  • Produce white papers outlining novel substantiation approaches
  • Build and experimentally validate efficient, semi-automated tools for analysis of
  • Composite panels (monolithic or stiffened)
  • Bonded joints
  • Fastened joints
  • Create report templates
  • B.S. in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or another relevant discipline
  • 5+ years of experience creating analysis documents in FAA certification context
  • Excellent understanding of metal and composite materials failure modes
  • Expert knowledge of joints analysis (bonded and fastened), test and substantiation
  • Proficiency with engineering calculations tools (Excel macros, Python, Matlab, etc..)
  • Ability to deliver detailed analysis templates, reports and certification documents
  • Strong understanding of Finite Element Analysis
  • Basic abilities to navigate CAD models
  • M.S./Ph.D. in relevant discipline
  • 10+ years of working in small aircraft structural certification
  • Detailed understanding of substantiation strategies for FAR 23, 25 and/or 27
  • Extensive experience performing tests, analysis and correlation of primary structure interfaces for composite aircraft
  • Expert knowledge of design requirements and failure modes for composite stiffened panels
  • Experience creating automated tools for margin analysis and reporting geared towards FAA certification
  • Advanced proficiency with Abaqus/CAE
