Joby Aviation is seeking a talented power electronics engineer and leader to join our team designing electric aircraft. As a team leader, you will work closely with mechanical, thermal, software, and other cross functional teams to lead the design of motor inverters and DC/DCs from 0.5-150 kW. This is a hands-on position leading our existing talented team as well as recruiting and expanding the team and capabilities. Optimizing designs for reliability, weight, and efficiency will be a focus.
Responsibilities:
- Set strategic and tactical goals and milestones for the team
- Participate in the design and specifications for optimal subsystem layout and interactions within the powertrain
- Guide and mentor both entry level as well as seasoned team members
- Assess the capabilities of the team and determine roadmap to expand those capabilities through hiring
- Simultaneously push forward strategic innovation while meeting near-term milestones
- Write requirements, participate in DFMEAs, create and carry out test and validation plans
- Lead design reviews through every stage of the development process, ensure high standard of work output
- Some direct design engineering contribution simultaneous with leading the team
Required:
- Strong EE fundamentals, including familiarity with:
- Power conversion
- Signal conditioning and conversion (ADCs, filters)
- Discrete semiconductor design (FETs, BJTs, Diodes)
- Experience with schematic capture and PCB design
- Experience with component selection
- Completed (designed/built/tested) high voltage/high power designs
- Great communication skills
- B.S. in electrical engineering or related discipline
Desired Experience:
- M.S./Ph.D. in relevant discipline with a focus in power electronics
- 10+ years of working experience in relevant industry
- Familiarity with Altium Designer
- Exposure to regulatory certification
- Design-for-reliability, including use of DFMEA and fault trees
- Designing for high EMI environments
- Wide bandgap semiconductors
- Battery systems
