Senior Maritime Installation Engineer

What you will do:

The primary role of the Maritime Electronics Technician will be to install and configure the MarineInsight analytics platform on a number of different classes of vessels. Installation involves mounting computer hardware, running network wiring, and configuring platforms once they are installed. 

Your responsibilities:

  • Plan layout and complete installations of network wiring and computer equipment based on job specifications, engineering and wiring diagrams
  • Document installation work including final wiring layout, device locations, and set up
  • Follows-up with management regarding vessel survey and install for customer engagement
 
Your Skills:

  • Basic understanding of vessel electrical systems
  • Basic understanding of Maritime engines, generators, PLCs, and other onboard devices
  • Comfort with basic computer administration including the ability to change network settings, etc
  • Basic understanding of LAN networks and setup
  • Basic understanding of multimeters and other test equipment
  • If remote -- maintain adequate inventories of electrical spare parts and requisitions replacements as required
  • Must be able to carry a tool bag weighing up to 30 pounds and be comfortable using hand tools and power tools
  • Able to enter and exit a standard horizontal and vertical manhole and climb vertical or inclined ladders
  • Understands safety procedures and use of safety equipment
  • Can work without direct supervision onboard to complete tasks
  • 5 years+ experience actively working on / installing equipment on vessels

  • Physical experience working with the following networks:
    • Ethernet (1)
      • Knowledge of, and experience with, physically running Ethernet cables, acceptable topologies, and network limitations
    • CANbus (⅔)
      • Knowledge of the physical layout and topologies of a CANbus network. 
      • Do not need to know protocols
    • Serial (⅔)
      • Knowledge of the physical layout and topologies of serial networks
      • Do not need to know protocols
  • Vessel power systems (⅔)
    • Knowledge of how AC power distribution works on various vessels
    • Knowledge of how DC power distribution and access is setup on various vessels
  • TCP/IP Networking (1)
    • Ability to login and config an Ethernet switch either by Ethernet RJ-45 or direct serial connection (DB-9)
    • Knowledge of TCP/IP networks, routing concepts, DNS, VLANs, VPNs
    • Ability to use port scanning tools to probe a network 
    • Knowledge of network tools such as ping, netmap, tcpdump, etc.
  • Linux (1)
    • Knowledge of basic command line tools
      • Connections (ssh, scp, tty)
      • File system navigation (ls, cd, rm, etc)
      • File manipulation (Vim, cat, head, tail, grep)
    • System tools (bonus)
      • Start/stop services

      • Network tools and knowledge of config files (ifconfig, resolv.conf, etc)
      • Knowledge of the different type of linux networking interfaces (eth0, ppp0, etc)
  • Physical Install (1)
    • Handy working on a vessel, ability to find creative physical installation locations. 
    • Experience with power tools (drilling), self tapping screws, etc. 
    • Ability to find creative solutions within the physical confines of a pilot house or ECR. 
    • Comfortable running cable on a vessel
  • Basic PC based knowledge (1)
    • Comfortable with x86 hardware
    • BIOS navigation 
  • Maritime knowledge (1)
    • Experience and comfort with how vessels are laid out. General idea of where things are along with procedures onboard.
    • Experience with vessel schedules and time planning for vessel maintenance
    • Experience with port procedures, customs, etc. 
  • Documentation (1)
    • Experience documenting IT/Vessel projects. This includes the following:
      • Line diagrams for networks 
      • Physical connections 
      • Where IT and physical assets are onboard a vessel
  • Management (1)
    • Ability to manage either a team of installers or 3rd party installation partners.
