The Role

The Lead Building Data Engineer is responsible for the data quality, structure and integrity of 3D geometry  produced from point clouds. You will lead and manage geometry modelling in-house and contracted teams locally and overseas to set the production schema for building information database structures such that all HELIX models and deliverables follow a consistent practice  and best-in-class standard. 

You will work closely with our Reality Capture, Product Management and Software Engineering teams to research, develop and implement a common building data structure employing a relational database. Position Details
As a Lead Building Data Engineer you will be based in Chicago and part of the globally distributed Building Data Solution team. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Being our in-house expert in the process of converting point clouds into useable geometry and BIM models
  • Developing and maintaining leading edge industry expertise and knowledge in the field of point cloud to model conversion processes and technologies
  • Develop and document best practice procedures for the conversion of point cloud to geometry models and BIM models
  • Develop process optimisations for our scan to BIM solutions
  • Invent, describe and map out (in partnership with the Product Management team) new software and technology that can be developed by the software engineering team to automate point cloud to geometry conversion and QA processes
  • Supervise, train and mentor Junior Staff and Remote Teams
  • Research & develop the HELIX building data schema, taking inspiration from open source industry initiatives such as COBIE and IFC
  • Scanning, measuring and photographing buildings in Singapore and overseas
  • Participating in product development and software engineering planning
  • Testing alpha and beta in-house developed software and meticulously documenting and logging bugs
  • Interface with HELIX clients and offshore teams to ensure product quality

Position Requirements
  • Undergraduate degree in the field of Architecture, Engineering or Construction from an accredited university
  • Fundamental understanding of how buildings are constructed
  • Practical experience in the architecture, civil/mechanical engineering or construction industries
  • At least 5 years Experience with 3D Modelling software including Revit and Sketchup
  • At least 3 years experience in a client facing BIM Advisory Role
  • At least 3 years experience in BIM coordination and the creation of structured BIM database standards and specifications
