Center Youth Volunteer Tutor

Summary: The main responsibility of the Center Youth Volunteer Tutor is to provide wide-ranging academic support to youth during weekly, drop-in “Study Hall” hours. In order to meet the various needs of our members, Center Youth is seeking tutors with a broad knowledge base in one or both of the following general areas: English Language Arts, History, Social Sciences, Sciences, Technology, Engineering, Math, etc. 
 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Provide a consistent and caring adult presence to LGBTQ young people during weekly “Study Hall/Tutoring” drop-in hours.
  • Offer subject-specific support to youth during “Tutoring” hours (i.e. proofreading essays and reports, assistance with STEM-related content, etc.).
  • Assist youth with online research related to academics, college exploration, and/or career development.
  • Provide assistance with basic computer support (e.g. assisting with internet searches, seeking IT staff support as needed, etc.).
  • Seek staff support, as needed, to address any concerns that arise.
 
Position Requirements:
  • Ability to commit 2 hours/week for 4 and a half months (there are two cycles per year: October to mid-February and mid-February to end of June) with the possibility to continue on.
  • Over the age of 23 (cannot be eligible to be a participant in the program).
  • Understanding of appropriate boundaries when working with youth.
  • Familiarity with LGBTQ populations, including knowledge of the spectrum of youth, sexual orientation, gender identity and transgender issues.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to interact with a wide range of personalities.
  • Flexibility and initiative required to work within a drop-in group structure.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse communities and understand intersectionality of oppressions.
  • Strong commitment to social justice, progressive issues, and empowering the LGBT communities.
  • Expertise in multiple subject areas relevant to high school and college-aged youth.
  • Experience with education and or tutoring highly preferred (e.g. retired or current educators, graduate-level education majors, etc.).
  • Volunteers must submit fingerprints for a background check in accordance with grant requirements.
  • Volunteers must attend a Center Youth orientation.
