Principal Android Engineer

We’ve built a beautiful investing app to trade in real shares, with zero commissions or fees in a fluid, mobile-first experience. And behind the app, we’re building all the technology and infrastructure from the ground up. 

With over £10m in funding so far and as the most overfunded company ever on Crowdcube,  we are now expanding our team further and are poised to disrupt the £1.2 trillion UK retail investment market. And that's just the start.

This is an exciting opportunity for a Senior Android Engineer to come on board to define improvements to our existing offering and define how we implement more features for our extensive user base.  

In your first twelve months at Freetrade, you will: 

  • Drive best practice for Android development & work with iOS engineers to improve client engineering as a whole. 
  • Contribute to our engineering process across the wider team.
  • Own the design and development of multiple complex features. 
  • Develop a deep understanding of Android codebase and the domain knowledge relevant to our product. 
  • Help raise the bar for our team by contributing to best practices, automation, documentation, and hiring. 
  • Level up our operational excellence for mobile applications, and drive our team to maintain it. 
  • Use your understanding of industry trends to identify potential engineering optimisations for the business.
  • Our work culture prioritises speed, care, and effectiveness and you’ll have the freedom to pursue your own ideas and solutions. 

About you: 

  • You’ll have strong experience building and shipping consumer-facing apps used by thousands of people. 
  • You care about quality, code craft and solving difficult problems. You are hands-on, collaborative and adaptable. 
  • You’re eager to work with new technologies and also learn more about investment and Fintech.
  • Our stack comprises a mix of technologies, you should an extensive background writing Android apps - check out our current stack here.
  • You'll look for improvements in our development practices and work with engineers outside your team to improve your craft. 
  • You’ll collaborate with growth, operations and, most of all, design to build and iterate a best-in-class product. 
  • You'll also contribute to our engineering process across the wider team, ensuring the best possible experience for our users. 

About our environment:

We use serverless technologies such as Firebase, Cloud Composer, and Stackdriver, to build a reliable and performant platform. We use the real-time database, cloud functions and other features like pub/sub to provide a frictionless investment platform. 

You will work with a variety of client and platform technologies. You will own the quality of major deliverables end-to-end, working closely with multiple engineers and teams to execute them. Scaling, latency, and customer experience are top priorities as the business grows.

Salary of £85k to £95k.
