Editor-in-Chief

  • $90,000.00 - $120,000.00/year
  • Free Agency is a new talent startup (started in April, $2.35m raised). We provide job search and career management to tech talent. Hollywood entertainers and athletes have agents -- why shouldn’t everyone else? We’re not ready to share all the details publicly, but our product and business model allow us to pair closely with every candidate that comes to us looking for a career upgrade.

Our Editor-in-Chief will help our entire team maintain a consistent, high-standard quality of writing and storytelling. We write resumes, cover letters, recruiting emails, follow-ups, marketing material, sales outreach, content marketing, and everything in between. Our expectations for internal writing is high, and we’re looking for an individual to own and drive excellence against those expectations.

You’ll guard our brand, voice, standard of writing, error rate, and storytelling. You must have the ability to storytell. While you don’t need prior experience with resumes or related career writing, we will be looking to have you help us craft what we think are best-in-the-world resumes and related documents that help our candidates fly higher in their careers.

You might be good for this role if other job titles you're looking at include:
    • Editor-in-Chief
    • Head of Content
    • Writer or Editor
    • Communications
    • Copywriter

We think your daily responsibilities will include:
    • Work with Talent Agents to edit or draft resumes, cover letters, and other documents.
    • Drive all internal teams to adopt the same brand voice and standard of quality.
    • Write or edit other organizational communication, whether internal or external.
    • Conceive of and write content for marketing purposes.
    • Manage an editorial calendar, for internal and external communication.
    • Own and evolve a content development workflow across all teams.

Things that you may want to know:
    • We enforce, enthusiastically, the Oxford comma.
    • Free Agency does already have a particular voice we’re looking to keep/evolve.
    • We don't mind whether you're on the lesser or more experienced end of the spectrum. This role is adaptable based on seniority.
    • You'll be person #1 with this job title. While we think we know what you'll be doing, you'll be key in helping us improve your job description.

Internally, we expect you to mostly collaborate with:
    • The co-founders.
    • The Chief of Staff.
    • Others on the Talent Team.

We try to look for aptitude and ability, not experience, but here are some things that might hint to us that you're a fit:
    • You are an expert storyteller. Again, you don’t need to have written in the job search or recruiting space, but we have a high standard for the stories our documents tell.
    • You've held roles that required attention to detail and a consistent cadence of communication.

Compensation: This depends on your experience and how much of the role we expect you to fulfill immediately. If you're a junior team member and we think you'll be great at 70% of the above but need time to learn the other 30%, you should expect to make around $90,000. If you're more senior and we think of you as someone who will own this role, assist in defining its future, and help us hire others, you could make around $120,000. We also offer equity in the business and we'll be extremely transparent during offer-stage as to the details of any equity offering.
