Head of Rigging - Television, Immersive & Advertising

The Head of Rigging is a leadership role in London’s Integrated Advertising (IA) division that focuses on the technical and creative challenges of rigging across all IA projects, as well as talent management and nurturing of the entire rigging team. The Head of Rigging, working closely with the talent team, will be heavily involved in future planning of the rigging team across all projects, hiring new riggers when needed and ensuring that Framestore’s rigging team in London is of the highest standard possible.

Essential to this role is a positive leadership style, with a can-do approach and problem-solving mentality.

The Head of Rigging will work closely with other departments, particularly the CFX and Pipeline Team in order to develop the global rigging workflow. The Head of Rigging will report to the Heads of 3D and the Head of Talent. The person in this role will still be actively working on projects, and the projects will be scheduled to allow for the additional time required to conduct the Head of Rigging responsibilities. 

Responsibilities:
  • Plan the future development of the rigging department with a focus on building a team who are technically and creatively brilliant, as well as working well and cohesively as a team
  • A strong focus on speed and efficiency.  Diagnosing opportunities for fast “off the shelf” rigging solutions.  
  • Work closely with other departments to ensure inter-departmental cooperation and lead collaboration between Integrated Advertising and Film teams
  • Support CG Supervisor to explore and create the rigs for a project to a client’s requirements and specifications.
  • To improve on the current skinning and deformation techniques, ensuring that all character deformation is at the highest possible quality.
  • Work closely with the animation team to create rigs which are artist-friendly
  • Ensure that every project is fairly considered and crewed, working closely with the talent team
  • Mentor and nurture new rigging talent
  • Be critical of the artist’s work and give constructive guidance when needed
  • Work in tandem with CFX crew to develop a solid muscle, skin workflow
  • Investigate new rigging techniques and technologies; ie. Weight Shift, Houdini, Shapes 
  • Be capable of addressing a team clearly and concisely
  • Be responsible for your scheduled project’s rigging tasks
  • Support and work with pipeline TD's
  • Maintain a hands-on approach to rigging, taking responsibility for problem-solving and creating rigs as required

Management responsibilities:
  • Help assign Rigging crew by working with the talent team on schedules 
  • Help build and manage the team by supporting in recruitment and career development. A key area will be the nurturing of new talent and graduate recruitment
  • You may be required to conduct reviews and appraisals for the Rigging team members in place of the Head of CG. 
  • Take an active part of the CG board


Skills:
  • A senior rigger with 8+ years of broad rigging experience in commercials and/or film, covering creature, digital doubles, character and facial rigs.
  • A passion for creating believable CG characters and the requisite attention to detail
  • Advanced Python or Mel, GUI scripting and the ability to follow strict coding standards
  • Experience with full scripted modular/functional rigging
  • Analytical and artistic skills, creativity and visual problem solving
  • Experience and passion for leadership, with a positive outlook and ability to inspire the team
  • Ready and keen to take a step back from the hands on creative in order to nurture talent and head a team where artists can learn and grow
