Senior Battery Engineer

Role Description

We are looking for a Senior Battery Engineer to aid in the product development efforts of Form Energy’s long duration energy storage system. The Senior Battery Engineer will be responsible for component integration, conceptual design, and active-area scale-up of Form Energy’s core energy-storing reactor. Additionally, the Senior Battery Engineer will be responsible for specifying and coordinating experiments on fleets of reactors to test design improvement hypotheses. This role will work within a highly interdisciplinary team, comprised of mechanical engineers, materials scientists, and chemists, towards Form Energy’s convergent product development efforts. As the electrochemical device expert on the team, the Battery Engineer will be the responsible individual for informing mechanical design from the interpretation of electrochemical performance data. The role is anticipated to be extremely hands-on, with >50% of time spent working in the lab. The ideal candidate will have deep practical experience with electrochemical devices while exhibiting a scrappy, interdisciplinary problem-solving attitude. Additionally, the ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of fluid mechanics and mass transfer.

What you’ll do:

  • Propose design changes to Form Energy’s electrochemical energy-storing reactor, especially relating to optimization of fluid delivery systems, mass transport, and overpotential reduction strategies
  • Be the responsible individual for linking mechanical design improvements to electrochemical performance test data
  • Serve as the team’s deep expert on electrochemical science, mass transport, and fluid mechanics
  • Specify and execute experiments to quantify electrochemical performance, as well as interpret the resulting data sets
  • Specify, coordinate, and execute electrochemical validation tests
  • Communicate electrochemical performance test data to an interdisciplinary group of engineers
  • Provide regular data updates to and coordinate design reviews with the technical development team
  • Contribute to the build-out of Form Energy’s test lab infrastructure by adding new functionality and aiding in capital equipment purchases
  • Collaborate with the systems engineering team to develop reactor balancing and monitoring strategies
  • Develop standard operating procedures (SOPs) and work instructions for executing regular tests or laboratory processes
  • Aid in the development of Form Energy’s quality assurance program
  • Champion for safety, especially in the development of new laboratory processes

Qualifications:

  • BS (MS preferred) in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field
  • 7+ years experience designing electrochemical energy storage or conversion systems (i.e., PEM fuel cells, SOFCs, Li-ion, alkaline batteries)
  • Has deep practical experience with electrochemical science and systems
  • Direct experience working in an environment geared towards electrochemical product development or pilot electrochemical system deployment
  • Experience with optimizing mass transport and fluid mechanics through electrochemical systems
  • Experience designing experiments in an industrial research setting
  • Experience communicating new designs through CAD models, sketches, and design reviews is a plus
  • Experience with computational modeling (i.e., COMSOL, MATLAB, Python) is a plus
