Senior Staff Attorney – Adult Detention

THE ORGANIZATION

 
The Florence Project was founded in 1989 to respond to a representation crisis for indigent non-citizens detained at the rural Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Detention Center in Florence, Arizona. Through our programs today, we provide services to the more than 7,500 men, women, and children that are detained in Arizona on any given day.  The Florence Project is nationally known for its legal service delivery systems which ensure that detained people are empowered and have access to justice. The Florence Project provides high quality legal services and supports initiatives for national changes in immigration law and policy. 
 
SENIOR STAFF ATTORNEY POSITION SUMMARY 

The Florence Project has openings for senior staff attorneys, serving detainees in Florence and Eloy, Arizona.  The senior staff attorney will work within the Adult Program and will provide direct representation to individuals detained in Florence and Eloy, AZ. They will also serve as a trainer and mentor to staff attorneys and legal assistants on the Adult Team. This includes co-chairing representation with staff attorneys before the Immigration Court and the Board of Immigration Appeals.  The senior staff attorney will work with the managing attorney to develop systems associated with intakes, case distribution, and allocation of resources to cases and take on special assignments as designated by the managing attorney or program manager. The senior staff attorney will also be required to attend and play an active role in ad hoc meetings with staff and/or stakeholders. 
 
On a limited basis the senior staff attorney will provide group “Know Your Rights” presentations, individual intakes, group and individual court counseling and prep sessions, and pro se services to immigrants facing removal proceedings before the Immigration Court.  The senior staff attorney may also mentor law student interns, externs, special project fellows, and other volunteers, and actively participate in case reviews and in related advocacy and outreach projects. 
 
The Florence Project has three offices in Phoenix, Tucson, and Florence. The Florence office is headquartered approximately one hour south of Phoenix and one to one and a half hours north of Tucson. Our Florence office allows for staff to work from there and have quick access to clients detained in Florence and Eloy facilities. The position may work from any three of the offices, and which location is best for the senior staff attorney and the program will be discussed during the interviewing stage. 

QUALIFICATIONS 

Fluency or advanced proficiency in Spanish is required.  The applicant must be licensed to practice law in any state. A minimum of two years experience providing legal services to detained individuals in removal proceedings is required. We seek applicants who have a demonstrated commitment to immigration issues and public interest law, who enjoy working in a collaborative, high volume, and energetic work environment, and who are flexible team players.  Prior advocacy work in immigrant rights, human rights, LGBTQ rights, the criminal justice field, the mental health field, or experience working with trauma survivors is a plus. Travel is required for this position, therefore candidates must have access to reliable transportation. Candidates must be able to clear a basic background check and pass a security clearance to enter detention facilities. 
 
SALARY AND BENEFITS 

This is a full-time, salaried-exempt position. Salary is based on experience. The Florence Project strives to create and uphold a positive, supportive, and inclusive work environment for staff.  We offer excellent benefits, including:
