FirstCarbon Solutions is seeking a full-time Staff Biologist to prepare sections of initial studies, environmental impact reports and other related CEQA/NEPA documents for both public and private clients. These scientific / environmental project assignments require application of moderately complex objectives and limited variables. Must be able to work independently on medium sized projects as well as assist more senior scientists on larger projects. Candidates should have a knowledge of and/or job training in botany, wetlands and wildlife surveys; have a good working knowledge of state and federal: sensitive species laws, aquatic resource laws and environmental documentation requirements (e.g. NEPA & CEQA). Assignments may require dealing with diverse working conditions while in the field.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Prepare sections of initial studies, environmental impact reports and other related documents
- Conduct the analysis of project effects on biological resources for environmental compliance, such as those related to CEQA and NEPA
- Perform field investigations and/or analysis of field data including wetland delineations, biological resource inventories, pre-construction and rare plant surveys
- Contribute to regulatory permitting efforts
- Support development of client relationships, business development, and proposals

- Demonstrate good organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks in a dynamic environment
- Demonstrate proficiency in MS Office software applications, especially Word and Excel, as well as internet usage
Work Environment
The position operates in both a professional office environment and diverse fieldwork conditions. This role routinely uses standard office equipment. Assignments may require dealing with a variety of working conditions while in the field including traveling, weather and terrain.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may spend extended periods of time in diverse weather conditions and terrain. May spend long periods of time sitting in front of a computer. It may be necessary to to carry equipment and will need the ability to lift & carry a minimum of 5 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Biology or related field
- Minimum 2-3 years related work experience in biological/environmental projects and tasks
- Knowledge of environmental regulations relation to biological resources including Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act and California Fish and Game Code
Competency in two or more disciplines:
- California botanical inventory experience
- Terrestrial wildlife experience, especially bird identification
- Aquatic Resource (wetlands) Delineations as they pertain to state and federal jurisdictions
Working knowledge of the following a plus:
- State and federal endangered species acts
- US Clean Water Act sections 401 & 404
- Porter Cologne Water Quality Act
- California Fish and Game Code Sections 1600 et seq.
- Migratory Bird Treaty Act
